Me too! I almost screamed in class!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/fredrikov

such great news! :) i wonder why i wasnt notified of it.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/galletadecolores

Same here....Notification would have been nice, so I could have started earlier! lol. :P

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Nievva

Finally I get to help people learn russian! Урааа! jumps with joy

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TatianaBeastmode

I have to post, just to see the new flag after my name! So happy!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TatianaBeastmode

Oh, I guess the flag will show up after I level up. Back to work!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/TatianaBeastmode

Now I should have the flag! There it is!

      [deactivated user]

I was considering doing the same. I haven't leveled up yet.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Patrezko

Just curious if I can see the mine

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jamflipp

Hi guys! Congratulations for the beginning this course, and if you have any questions about russian language, I'd be happy answer to them.)

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/frogger2013

lol I just tried the placement test out of curiosity and I tested out of literally zero skills! Not even alphabet. Definitely excited to begin!!

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vadimfowler

Great course! I find it hard though to graduate from level 9 - perhaps because, as a native speaker, I take too many liberties with English equivalents ;)

I think the course could benefit from a virtual Russian keyboard.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/nik2311

Yes, I agree entirely - it needs a virtual Russian keyboard - like for Turkish, etc.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Spike796956

I think they should add a Russian keyboard as I've missed a few questions for not using a Russian keyboard, although that could be my fault as you might be able to find one as an adaptation.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/draquila

Windows comes with keyboards for most languages pre-installed. It's also pretty easy to find a phonetic Russian keyboard with Google.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/keegan_d

Windows actually has a phonetic russian keyboard, the яшерты layout. I made a basic guide to it, if you wanna use it: https://i.imgur.com/Xiz6T4p.png

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/-..--..-.-.-.-

Install one on your computer maybe?! or use http://russian.typeit.org/

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vadimfowler

I now use google translate to write in Russian and then copy-paste it into Duolingo.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/shubbe01

Ha, that's what I was doing, too. And then my placement quiz said "You placed out of zero things!" Sorry, very old Russian degree. I have forgotten everything, and let you down.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MikeMotto

i changed the settings in Windows to make it a Russian keyboard and then put pieces of tape on the keys and wrote on the tape to show the Russian letters. Not bad! Once it gets to the mobile app it will be easy to use the Russian keyboard since you can switch back and forth easily on the phone.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Joeman2003

they sell the stickers on ebay for the russian keyboard for a dollar or two as well, they go on over so you can see both english and russian alphabet

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Tom_Adams101

I'm going to invite myself to the party of people whose degrees are ashamed of them. Three years of Russian got me zero placement whatsoever, which is reasonably terrifying.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kenmerk

There is a bug in the placement test, it's giving everyone zero and making them start from the beginning. Just happened to me too. This needs to be fixed.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/shubbe01

At least we should fly through the beginning stuff! I think I was overconfident, because I can still read it fairly well, but it turns out I retained very little in the way of spelling. :)

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SquirrelWalsh

Now I definitely don't feel so bad for having to start at zero, after years of study. Although my spelling is crap, which I'm sure did not help with the assessment.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/rusoved

Yeah, there's a lot of totally acceptable answers that need to be added to the course.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Crisp_by_Yosi

Tell me about it. As a native speaker I reported a lot of answers.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Captain000

Just get some cyrillic stickers and instal a Russian keyboard, far better and quicker :)

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ymapazagain

I agree about the keyboard. I'm currently on my laptop switching between the English and Russian keyboard layout for each question. And as I'm new to the Russian keyboard layout it is incredibly slow going, having switch to another page to check where the letters are. I know I will get faster as it becomes more familiar, but an inbuilt keyboard would be so much more practical!

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/FirstTiger

on a mac, you should be able to command-space to switch languages after you add the Russian keyboard. If you're on windows, that's your problem :-)

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ymapazagain

shift-alt is working for me to switch languages. I'm slooooooowly learning the layout of the Russian keyboard.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/pzhukova

        It's alt-(left)shift on Windows.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/tomprimozic

What? Command-Space just brings up Spotlight search for me...

Edit: nevermind, I found it... I needed to change the Keyboard Shortcuts in Settings.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Shady_arc

In it one of the possible Mac shortcuts, I thinks. Also, you need to actually have several languages installed in the System Preferences.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/remythecat

I would be much happier if Duolingo added a Russian keyboard- as it would take me a quicker amount of time to type out the Cyrillic letters. As of now, I use the "Character Map" application on Windows 7 (I have no desire to install any new applications). Until Duolingo releases a virtual keyboard, it will be difficult for me to avoid getting wrong answers when I am asked to translate from English into Russian! (Very frustrating and time-consuming)

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RueChikanya

I agree, considering that everyone taking this course might not have access to a Russian keyboard.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/dos_peter

I also agree, I keep getting "mistakes" because I do not have a Russian keyboard

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MCihat

спасибо , Команда русский :) Я ждал долгое время :))

        [deactivated user]

I'm glad even though it's here during novel writing month. One problem is I don't hear anything and I thought we would have sound.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BrookeLorren

Another NaNo writer! It will be a very busy month, I'm sure :-)

          [deactivated user]

Very busy. I love that Russian is here but I won't be doing a whole lot until NaNo is over. But I have already made my character speak Russian and now she's going to teach it.

            https://www.duolingo.com/profile/snowice0

might be an issue with your computer - my laptop has the same problem but on my desktop I hear everything fine

            [deactivated user]

That's probably it. I really wanted to hear it. I only have a laptop at the moment. It's still fun even without the sound.

              https://www.duolingo.com/profile/prudentia

Very excited for this! It being on here actually got me interested in trying it in the first place, now a week into my Russian learning this will be great to supplement.

              https://www.duolingo.com/profile/skaarup75

One skill down. 78 to go :-) So no more than 78 days to go before that tree is all golden. (One can dream)

              https://www.duolingo.com/profile/xaghtaersis

And my linguistic and cultural journey through the largest nation on earth has begun! Russian is one of the major languages on my list. I have always wanted to learn Russian and now I finally got the chance! Thanks duolingo Russian team!

              https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BrookeLorren

Yay! I was the 47th person to sign up!

              https://www.duolingo.com/profile/savourtardis

I think I was the 48th! (at least, it said 47 people were learning it when I clicked the button)

              https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PolishMathew

              I was also the 48th! :D

              [deactivated user]

Me four xdd well, there's a lot of 48th learners..

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Tom_Adams101

Haha... so was I - and there was me feeling so special!

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sannehoo

Me too. I guess the counter is a little overworked today!

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/yullen

It said 47 people already when I signed up...we must have been pretty close together then :)

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Vedun

The counter doesnt update often enough, it said 47 for me too. I guess there's no way to really know.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/magicafan

Yeah it also said 47 for me too, I think it's inaccurate

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/fredrikov

                i was the 42nd. :D

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/galletadecolores

Lucky you...I was like the 4K person to sign up!

I've been refreshing the courses page all day and when I saw Russian wasn't there I freaked out -- I'm gonna spend all night on this.

It's pleasing how easy it is given that I know Bulgarian though! :)

                мерси Russian team!!!

Does anyone know how long until this will be good for Mobile?

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Ali019

I'm on an IPad and have no idea how to find a Russian keyboard. I will have to try again on a machine with more capacity to switch from one tab to another. However, if anyone knows how I can find the Russian alphabet on an iPad, I'd love to hear from you.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mlynarova

You can add the keyboard under settings/keyboard/add and switch between them by pressing the key with the globe on it.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/alejandrozuleta

I have been waiting so long for this!! Thanks!!

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

Hooray! I'm not convinced by the pretest, it said I didn't test out of anything but I already know a fair amount, there's been nothing new in the first several lessons.

Delighted to have started the Russian course today! Thank you!!

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ironclad85

Thanks for bringing this course to Duolingo. I have a couple of questions, though. First, how do you enable the course to display the lessons in Cyrillic alphabet? And second, when will be this course available in the app? Once again, I thank you for this amazing effort since I always wanted to learn this language. Have a nice day :)

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kalex814

If I may make a suggestion (sorry if it's already been said, but this thread is already too long to read through), I think it would be a great idea to include an additional alphabet exercise that actually goes through the alphabet in full and lets you test your pronunciation of the letters. I think it would help a lot with the listening exercises. The exercise tips explanations are good overall if I need them, but some are confusing, and, honestly, I usually forget it's there.

This made my day, though I still haven't had enough time to learn what you said in Russian.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Vedun

This is gonna sound weird but I've always been amazed at how stereotypically Russian Putin looks.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/patrickp90

It's not weird if it's true.

Woohooo!!! Thank you to all the Russian team for working so hard over such a long period of time to get this course ready for us! Just done my first lesson and looking forward to many more.

How does the 'Russian keyboard' work?

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Shady_arc

You may read our last update if you want to install a layout. Basically, it means that you press the same keys, but different letters appear.

                There are two main layouts:

                • the standard (ЙЦУКЕН) is what Russians use. Makes sense if Russian is your love for life or if you have easy access to Russian keyboards (stickers?) or if you live in Russia. For obvious reasons, makes total sense on a phone or a tablet (they have no physical keyboard anyway!—and they might turn out to be less customizable, but a standard keyboard is always there)

                standard

                • a phonetic keyboard (say, ЯВЕРТЫ) which sort-of-matches Russian letters to Latin letters close in pronunciation (also maps extra keys somewhere). I think, it is just fine if you are moderately interested in Russian but that's it. Has an obvious advantage if your physical keyboard does not have Russian letters.

                phonetic

On a PC or a Mac a phonetic keyboard mapping is always a choice (Macs even has one in the basic package), and the switching between the languages is done by keyboard shortcuts (Shift+Alt / ⌘ + Space)

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sophiesix-

I found it on my iPhone under settings/ keyboard/ add. Then there's a little globe that turned up on my regular screen keyboard and when you press it, you get the russian screen keyboard instead . Очен хорошо!

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Barb.M

How did you get Russian on your iPhone, on mine it says not supported

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Shady_arc

Hm. Really? Are you looking at English keyboards only and do not try to add different languages, or does it really nor support anything?

I actually though iPad and iPhone are similar in that department. Go figure...

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Barb.M

Well the problem wasn't adding the Russian keyboard, I was able to add it fine but when I go on Duolingo app; it says that the course is not yet supported on mobile.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Shady_arc

Ah, of course. It takes some time. MEanwhile, you can try using a browser. Not very convenent, though. Even on a tablet.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sophiesix-

Yeah I was using the browser on my iPhone, it also says 'not supported' through my app. Hopefully soon though? :3 is that being greedy ?

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SMargan

It has been a while coming! However, it was well worth the wait. :D

                Finally!! I'm so glad :D

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PittePie

omg I'd been waiting so much for this! :D ..Russians is one of the languages that I have in my list of languages to learn before I die. lol:P

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/karpsmom

This is so wonderful. I've been eagerly awaiting this for so long! Is there any expectation as to when it will be incorporated into the smartphone app version of Duolingo?

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/snowice0

Hey great job - I've been waiting a while but can someone please explain something to me - why is everything written in Latin? Is there anything to change that? I dont see why it isn't just written in Russian to begin with

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

When you go into a lesson, there's a little slider thing in the top left, slide it to the right or click it, it will change from Aa to Яя and then lessons will be in Cyrillic.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/snowice0

                got it thanks a bunch!

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ugliest

I agree - better would be to use Cyrillic by default.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/snowice0

perhaps after the "alphabet" course or after a small quiz but yeah of course its important

Latin alphabet, not Latin. When one says "written in Latin" it means the Latin language.

yeah i know I didn't care enough to actually write that out considering most people would understand me - given that this is a language learning site I will pay more attention next time

Thanks to the team! If you have Windows, install the Russian keyboard and then go to advanced settings and set a command to toggle between English and Russian keyboards. Then it is less awkward and you can work more quickly. Works for me.

At last! I'm so looking forward to this, thank you Duolingo and the Russian team! :)

Finally, after all these months of waiting !!!

Ok let's stop chatting and get studying. There is a new language ahead, and in a few months I want to have my first conversation in it.

I have just started Russian and also three Celtic languages. The alphabet takes time at first but i hope to do a lot.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SalzigeBrezel

It is funny to read such comments after 4 years, like "I'm so excited...", from people who managed to get the Russian course to level 3 since. :-)

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jsorensen68

ahh.. Is the entire course going to be in transliteration? I was a Russian major and it took me 45 minutes to get through the first 5 lessons.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Spelamigenpolska

You have the option to do both Latin and Cyrillic.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jsorensen68

Ahh.. Sorry that what the little button is in the upper right hand corner. Thanks I was going insane.

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/fillmont

Mobile doesn't seem to have the toggle yet

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sophiesix-

Aha! So that's why I can't find it! Thank you , I was getting frustrated lol

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ugliest

I did the placement test using cyrillic...but now the little toggle option has disappeared, and I'm stuck in transliteration hell. Anyone know what I can do to get it back, or to flip it permanently or...something?

                https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ugliest

Update in case anyone else runs into this: I am using Duolingo on my smartphone. The alphabet toggle doesn't show up for me on the default (mobile) version of the site, but if I select "view full site" and take the course there, I can switch to cyrillic. It's a workaround for the time being.

Now back to playing with the new toy :)
