RUSSIAN IS HERE!!!
i changed the settings in Windows to make it a Russian keyboard and then put pieces of tape on the keys and wrote on the tape to show the Russian letters. Not bad! Once it gets to the mobile app it will be easy to use the Russian keyboard since you can switch back and forth easily on the phone.
I agree about the keyboard. I'm currently on my laptop switching between the English and Russian keyboard layout for each question. And as I'm new to the Russian keyboard layout it is incredibly slow going, having switch to another page to check where the letters are. I know I will get faster as it becomes more familiar, but an inbuilt keyboard would be so much more practical!
I would be much happier if Duolingo added a Russian keyboard- as it would take me a quicker amount of time to type out the Cyrillic letters. As of now, I use the "Character Map" application on Windows 7 (I have no desire to install any new applications). Until Duolingo releases a virtual keyboard, it will be difficult for me to avoid getting wrong answers when I am asked to translate from English into Russian! (Very frustrating and time-consuming)
I'm glad even though it's here during novel writing month. One problem is I don't hear anything and I thought we would have sound.
Very busy. I love that Russian is here but I won't be doing a whole lot until NaNo is over. But I have already made my character speak Russian and now she's going to teach it.
That's probably it. I really wanted to hear it. I only have a laptop at the moment. It's still fun even without the sound.
Thanks for bringing this course to Duolingo. I have a couple of questions, though. First, how do you enable the course to display the lessons in Cyrillic alphabet? And second, when will be this course available in the app? Once again, I thank you for this amazing effort since I always wanted to learn this language. Have a nice day :)
If I may make a suggestion (sorry if it's already been said, but this thread is already too long to read through), I think it would be a great idea to include an additional alphabet exercise that actually goes through the alphabet in full and lets you test your pronunciation of the letters. I think it would help a lot with the listening exercises. The exercise tips explanations are good overall if I need them, but some are confusing, and, honestly, I usually forget it's there.
You may read our last update if you want to install a layout. Basically, it means that you press the same keys, but different letters appear.
There are two main layouts:
- the standard (ЙЦУКЕН) is what Russians use. Makes sense if Russian is your love for life or if you have easy access to Russian keyboards (stickers?) or if you live in Russia. For obvious reasons, makes total sense on a phone or a tablet (they have no physical keyboard anyway!—and they might turn out to be less customizable, but a standard keyboard is always there)
- a phonetic keyboard (say, ЯВЕРТЫ) which sort-of-matches Russian letters to Latin letters close in pronunciation (also maps extra keys somewhere). I think, it is just fine if you are moderately interested in Russian but that's it. Has an obvious advantage if your physical keyboard does not have Russian letters.
On a PC or a Mac a phonetic keyboard mapping is always a choice (Macs even has one in the basic package), and the switching between the languages is done by keyboard shortcuts (Shift+Alt / ⌘ + Space)
Update in case anyone else runs into this: I am using Duolingo on my smartphone. The alphabet toggle doesn't show up for me on the default (mobile) version of the site, but if I select "view full site" and take the course there, I can switch to cyrillic. It's a workaround for the time being.
Now back to playing with the new toy :)
