This may be a silly question... but I am very new and will ask anyways

Is "bebe" bring pronounced "bey-bey" or "vey-vey?" Also, Ella, being a "ll", is pronounced "eya", correct?

Gracias de antemano!

It's more of a "BEY-bey"* pronunciation (in most areas). You are correct, "ll" (double L) is pronounced as a "y" sound.

*Bebe (He/She/It drinks) is pronounced BEY-bey, but
Bebé (baby) is pronounced bey-BEY because of the accent.

The penultimate (second to last) syllable is stressed by default. The accent is what changes that.

The penultimate (second to last) syllable is stressed by default

only when the word ends in a vowel, n, or s - -

otherwise the last syllable is stressed by default (for example arroz is stressed on the o)

In Spanish, y may have a few different pronunciations, depending on how it is being used and the region in which it is being spoken.

y may be pronounced as the Spanish i (EE) in several scenarios such as when it is being used as the conjunction and; Me gustaría la ensalada y el sándwich

y may also be used such that it makes the same sound as ll (yema, yugular, etc). When used in this way, there are a few regional variations on its pronunciation:

  • The pronunciation generally taught as standard is that which makes the sound of the English y as it is used in yarn or yellow.

  • It may also be pronounced as a hard English J, as it is used in the words Joy and Jam.

  • Standard to several South American countries such as Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, it may also be pronounced as the English SH or the French J as it is used in shop or vision.

So, in "BEY-bey" why first word "BEY" is written in caps and second in small? Do they sounds different when in uppercase and than that in lower case (In Spanish)?

No, they sound equal. That's the accent mark. Spanish is a syllabled timed language, there are rules for pronunciation by mean of accent marks and written accents (tildes). That's why on Spanish doesn't need spell words.

So, when you read a word you know like it's pronounced. When you hear a word you know like it's written.

No, not "bey-bey" for "drinks," it is pronounced "beh-beh" (sort of like the way one says "bee-bee gun" but you say "beh-beh." (él bebe, ella bebe, etc.)

"the baby" is "el bebé" with an accent on the "é" to show stress on the last syllable. It is pronounced "beh-BEH"

Spanish is easier to understand how it is pronounce for me than the other language lesson here. Yeah Ella is pronounce as Eya and i think bebe is pronounce as veve. Spanish sometimes pronounce their b as v i think.

https://www.duolingo.com/SGuthrie0

My understanding is that the "b" is 1/2 way between a "b" and a "v" = vbey- vbey. or "bvey".

Pronounce it by saying "b", but instead of closing your lips for the "b", instead put your upper teeth on your lower lips.

Although, I have a Mexican friend whose "V" sounds very much like a hard "b" -- His "van" sounds like "ban".

It sounds to me, on the recording, that she is pronouncing Ella as "E ja" not " E ya"

Yes. In many places, the "y" is pronounced like a soft "j". (Not the "j" in "jar" (which is harder." ) "Yo" sounds like "Jzo". Or "ella" sounds like "ejza" or "E ja."

If you want to talk about phonetics, it is important to know some bases on phonetic transcription. If you express sounds in "your way", nobody is going to understand you. Notice that important people have spend their whole life studying "sounds". We should mind their work!

Ella bebe is pronounced this way: / ˈe ʝa ˈβe βe /

If you are interested I can tell you what it means.

That is it, IPA - International Phonetic Alphabet, adapted to any language. Some knowledge about how the way the air goes out of mouth, throat, action of vocal chords, nose, etc is needed if you want to distinguish "sounds" in the same or different languages. Regards, Etermenanki1.

It depends on the subject ( who you're talking about.) Beber is the infinitive form. You conjugate it based on who's talking. El bebe leche, he drinks milk. Ella bebe leche. She drinks milk. Yo bebo leche. I drink milk. Tu bebes leche. You drink milk.

Tu bebes - You(Singular) drink

There's also vosotros bebeis (you(plural) drink), but I think that might only be used in mainland Spain.

It has nothing to do with feminine, masculine, plural, etc... It is a little bit more complex.

It has to do with conjugations, different endings for each conjugation, pronouns, modes and tenses. All this must be learnt by memory, like phrasal verbs, idioms, vocabulary, thesaurus, etc...

Beber - Present Simple Indicative Mode (2nd Conjugation -er):
Yo bebo → I drink
Tú bebes → You drink
Él/Ella/Ello bebe → He/She/It drinks
Nosotros bebemos → We drink
Vosotros bebéis → You drink
Ellos beben → They drink

There are so many verb conjugator websites online if they're useful for you.

It is a very subtantial subject. Arguments we can talk about:

  • The use of "beber" (Spain) vs "tomar" (America).

  • Homograph "bebe" (= he drinks) vs "bebé" (baby)

  • Omission or not of the subject "ella".

  • Gender of the word "agua". It is feminine, but we have to say "el agua", because it starts by a "stressed a", to avoid cacophony.

  • Spanish sound / ʎ / and its dialect variations in the word "ella".

There are some others.

Ella is a Spanish pronoun equivalent to the English She or Her.

While Elle does exist in Spanish, it is not the masculine complement to Ella; Elle is the word in Spanish for ll as it is used in amarillo.

Ella almost always means she. It can sometimes be used for a feminine antecedent, as in

"Que" is incorrectly used in your sentence "Que es tu nombre" (by the way, "qué" has an accent on the "é," and the word "tú" has an accent on the "ú".

When asking someone their name, you use "Cual," (¿Cual es su nombre?) which is formal speech to be used when asked in a business setting or asking someone unfamiliar to you or who deems respect).

You can informally ask a child, or a peer in a casual setting, "¿Cómo te llamas?" They both mean "what is your name?"

Agua only refers to water; if you're looking for a generic term for a drink, you could use la bebida, or la refresca.

Or, if you're okay with a potential alcoholic connotation, you could use La copa, El palo, or El trago.

, usted, and ustedes all mean you, but are used differently in different circumstances; is used informally, such as when you're talking to a friend or a peer.

Tú eres mi amigo

Usted is used formally when you're only addressing one person and would be the correct form to be used with a professor or an elder.

Usted es una profesora

Ustedes is used when addressing multiple people and is used differently regionally; In much of Latin America, ustedes is used for both formal and informal addresses, though in Spain ustedes is used primarily for formal address, and the vosotros form reserved for informal address.

How do you know when to use bebe, bebes, or bebo? Does it have to do with the gender you are speaking to?

https://www.duolingo.com/Cardano
Cardano

These forms are called conjugations and don't depend on the gender of the nouns they modify. They depend on whether you are speaking/writing in the first, second, or third person and on whether you are addressing one or many people/things.

*Singular vs. Plural

*1st Person: I / We

*2nd Person: You / You all

*3rd Person: He/She/It / They

Verbs (in the present tense) in Spanish have their endings changed, or we may say that the verbs are "declined" accordingly. We start with the infinitive form of the verb, the "To" form of the verb in Spanish - to run, to die, to scream, etc - and remove the -er / -ir / -ar ending and add one of several endings. In this case we start with Beber and remove the infinitival ending, -er, and end up with the root Beb.

For verbs that end in -er -- as, Beber, Comer, sumir, etc. -- they are declined with the following endings

*Singular vs. Plural

*1st Person: -o / -emos

*2nd Person: -es / (-éis)

*3rd Person: -e /-eron

Beber

*Singular vs. Plural

*1st Person: bebo / bebemos

*2nd Person: bebes / (bebéis)

*3rd Person: bebe / beberon

Why Spanish has different genders is a question that we don't have a very good answer to other than the fact that it inherited this grammatical feature from Latin; Languages have been gendered for thousands of years, all the way back to Proto-Indo-European, predating Ancient Latin.

Gender is a form of noun-classification that may have some non-arbitrary usage, such as it's use in brother vs. sister - hermano vs. hermana. But in many cases (especially for inanimate objects) it has no actual meaning other than to allow for two words from one root; as in, la pela - Outer layer vs. el pelo - hair.

The verb bebe doesn't care if the object of the verb - whatever is receiving that action - is singular or plural.

For instance, in the sentences He drinks water/Él bebe agua and He drinks sodas/Él bebe los refrescos, the verb stays the same.

The ending of the verb only changes based on the speaker(s) or performer(s) of the verb.

Él bebe agua vs. Yo bebo agua.

I believe that tomar should be accepted. It is however a -ar verb and should be conjugated as toma.

Tomar vs. Beber is very regional. In some regions, tomar has a connotation of drinking alcohol, in others beber has that connotation, but I believe either should be accepted here.

If you would write "Ella bebes agua", the sentence would not make any sense (mainly in Spanish), just as "I drinks water" (although in English it would be so much understandable). You would be using conjugations with wrong pronouns or pronouns with wrong conjugations.

Ella bebes agua [Wrong] → bebes is 2nd singular person (Tú/You)
I drinks water [Wrong] → drinks is 3rd singular person (He/She/It)

I don't know if I've answered your doubt well and with clarity. If you have any question, you know what to do.

I hope it helps! :)

It has to be memorised by oneself, each pronoun has got its own ending. All romance languages work so, even German and Old English.

3rd singular Él/Ella/Ello/Usted bebe He/She/It drinks
