I think this is my favorite word
What does 'sannsynligvis' literally translate as?
Sann (true,truthful) synlig (visible,apparent) vis (fashion,manner,way) = Something that is likely to be/happen a certain way.
If you want literal cognates then: 'soothsightlywise'.
Sann = sooth (compare tann/tooth, munn/mouth); syn = sight (Old English had 'sien/syn' too but ended up preferring 'síht' (sight); - lig = ly; vis = wise (as in manner or way).
I think 'soothsightlywise' is exactly the mnemonic I've been searching for to help me remember this word. :-) Thank you!
Any difference between sannsynligvis and nok?
In this case they're interchangeable, but 'nok' can also mean 'enough'. 'sannsynlig' = 'likely/probable'.
And kanskje? Is that possibly,versus probably?
kanskje = maybe
Wow.. så flott! : ) Men, jeg tror at jeg skal IKKE for altfor lenge tid kunne(jeg vil si/betyr ''be able to'' her) huske dette ord! hahah X)
can du bruker: possibly
Is sannsynligvis a word I would use when someone asks me 'kan jeg hjelpe deg'.
Yes, if you think there's a strong likelihood that they can help you. If you're unsure, you might me better with 'kanskje' (maybe), or even 'forhåpentligvis, ja!' (hopefully, yes!).
