I know it's never gonna happen, but...

it might help keep the language alive, and so...

I would love an Ainu course.

I wouldn't expect Ainu for English speakers before Ainu for Japanese speakers.

Really, I wouldn't expect it at all, but I think it's only going to happen if there's already one for Japanese speakers.

Absolutely. Likewise, I'm hopeful that there will be a Catalan for English speakers sometime after the for Spanish speakers course comes out. And similarly, I imagine Basque for English speakers will only come out -- if it comes out at all -- after a for Spanish speakers course comes out.

In all three cases: here's to hoping!!

I am always thinking about this issue seriously. I live in Hokkaido, Japan, where many Ainu people still alive. But recent local newspaper says that Ainu language was carried on by the people who are over eighty years old now. Today only a few old people can speak it fluently, and the number is said to be less than ten! Unesco designates Ainu language as "critically endangered" which is the highest rank of its language endangerment.

It seems to be very difficult to build the Ainu course in Duolingo in terms of the lack of proper contributrors. But I think the perfect course, like an EN-FR or EN-RU course, is not necesarily required for such a "critically endangered" languages initially at least. To save such languages, it is very important to make as many people as possible feel interested in them. If Duolingo permits us to make a short course which contains just some of the lessons, basic and phrase for instance, some contributors who master the Ainu basics might be found. I ardently hope that Duolingo might consider for an emargency course. This is not just for Ainu language but for any language being in desperate need of assistance.

Well, if you are really involved in keeping Ainu alive you can try to approach organisations that have the same goal to dedicate recourses to building a course? Of course also try to ask people you know who speak the language to apply as contributor, especially people who have experience teaching it.

It's not out of reach, the language is written, barely alive, and is well studied, there is absolutely a market for it, especially in Japan. Unfortuanately there are not many people knowing it, making the process hard.

There are not many languages on Duolingo currently, it is expanding. If you know a few NATIVE speakers of the language that also know English then it can happen, if not we don't have a lot of chances.

Ainu - I would be happy to help. I just read the Ainu dictionary and the Ainu grammar guide. I can help with pronunciation too.
