Pretty much. You may (try to) fight this word order by using intonation, with the most likely outcome being confusing the listener.
In the past and future tenses it is a bit easier since you will most likely use Instrumental there for the subject complement of the predicate nominal or adjective (the thing introduced into the sentence with a copula). Still, starting with a subject is by far the most common way (even when you do have choice).
The copula is usually zero in the present tense. The verb быть is easily found in the past and future.
Note that making a noun or an adjective into a valid predicate is not the only meaning of the verb "to be". When existence is emphatically asserted or rejected, we use есть/нет. When the place of an object is identified, we may use «находиться» ("to be located") or another placement verb. English rarely specifies that objects "stand", "lie" or "hang" somewhere. Russian uses these verbs often.

hi Duo, since I am such a lousy speller, may I ask that instead of just telling me I am correct and giving me a pass on typing stuff like "животные" that you can at least type, "you have a typo". That was great in helping to correct spelling instead of blissfully meandering through life thinking that all is good. It used to happen and sometimes still does, but alas, the only way to trust Duo now is to open the comments page and living in a bad reception area, that adds literally hours to trying to get through the exercises. Thanks in anticipation

I KNOW! It's idiotic that they would decide to actively REMOVE typo notifications after they were there.

THANK YOU! At last someone else who agrees that it was stupid of them to do so (and imho incompetent) If duo want to figure out why people won'yt support their "plus" Maybe they should look at the saying "you get what you pay for" or more to the point "why would one pay for something that is actually DAMAGING to learning". the saying bring me a stick so that I can beat you with it comes to mind
