Now that Duolingo has added its first African language - Swahili - I would like to talk about why I think Amharic should be the next African language added to Duolingo.

Firstly, Amharic is spoken by around 26 million people worldwide, in Ethiopia, but also places like the UK, the US, and Sweden.

Secondly, Ethiopia is a very culturally and historically rich country. It is...

...the only African country not to have been colonised.

...the country from which coffee originates.

...the country from which humans are thought to come - the 3.2 million year old skeleton of the bipedal hominid Lucy was discovered in the Afar region of Ethiopia.

...home to 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, like the monolithic churches of Lalibela.

...and, home to the African Union's headquarters, which are situated in the capital city, Addis Ababa.

Thirdly, Amharic is an interesting and beautiful language. Due to the two attemps by Italy at colonising Ethiopia, and Semitic roots, it shares words with Italian (such as ፎርማጆ “formajo“ - cheese) and Arabic (such as ግመል “gïmäl“ - camel). It shares some grammatical features with Arabic, like some verb conjugations, and also has its own unique constructions. It's a morphologically rich language - that is, you can express a lot using just one word, like ባይሰጣቸውም (“even if it is not given to them“), or ስላልነገራችሁኝ (“because you did not tell me“)

In terms of practicality, this language wouldn't be too hard to implement. Each symbol represents a syllable, and the language is written left-to-right. Considering that we have Hindi in the incubator, Amharic could be added without too much hassle.

Amharic is my favorite African language! I was hoping it would be the first added, but I am excited for Swahili also. Can't wait until Amharic makes it in the incubator! Fingers crossed.

I would love this to happen - but it doesn't appear that there is a Amharic Keyboard on IOS - which is a major "market" for Duolingo.

There are a few - I use "Keyman", which you have to pay for, but you then get system-wide support, and the advantage is that you can add a keyboard for many other languages, not just Amharic. (There is a free version, but this doesn't let you add the keyboard system-wide).

Oh, I saw it after... visiting your website. By the way, congrats! You're doing a beautiful work. I hope there will be capable volunteers soon for helping you to bring Amharic to Duolingo. Be sure I'll visit your site very frequently when it will happen. :D

https://incubator.duolingo.com/ You know so much about it, why don't you make the course? Maybe people will volunteer to help.

There has been a lot of expressed interest in an Amharic duolingo course. I've also seen plenty of people who have volunteered to contribute to the course who say that they have reached out to duolingo with no luck. Really sad that this is case. I've almost given up on duolingo at this point and I no longer recommend it at this point. Seems like they just don't care.

There are some great books on Amazon for those wanting to learn Amharic.

I have nothing against adding Amharic, but in my opinion, I was just sorta hoping for the next African language to be from Sub-Saharan Africa, or in the Niger-Congo region. I have nothing against adding a North African language, but I'm tired of only getting African languages that aren't even representing African culture. I'd rather have a tribal language instead, like Yoruba or Xhosa. But like I said, it's not a bad idea. It's just my opinion I guess from a Congolese girl.
