Am I correct in thinking <<вот>> translates as "here is" while <<здесь>> translates as "here"?

Yes. And also there's "тут", which is almost always interchangeable with "здесь ".

Да. I often thing of вот as being something like "here you go." You would use it when you give something to someone.

вот can also function as an interjection: вот так да!, вот тебе и на! (there you are!), ну вот! (that’s all!)

It could also be translated as "that is" - вот о чём я говорю - that's what I am talking about.
