Why not? What country are you from? For an American (someone from the U.S.) it sounds perfectly natural.

"He reads us a newspaper" = "He reads a newspaper to us"

I know there's a difference between English as spoken in the United States vs English spoken in the U.K. Perhaps this is the problem?
