LOL, my first thought!

Длинная may be used only to form of book (phisical proportion). In other case must be: большая, объёмная. Длинным может быть роман, рассказ, поэма но не книга.

Yes, it can refer to a book. If you google "длинная книга", you’ll see it’s actually used a lot.

My friends from Russia say it only refers to a book that is many inches long. I heard "толстая книга" or "большая книга" when I just asked what was right.

Is it really wrong to say "I do not like to read..." instead of "want"?!

      • Я не хочу́ чита́ть = I don’t want to read,
      • Мне не нра́вится чита́ть = I don’t like to read,
      • Я не люблю́ чита́ть = I don’t like to read (about something you read regularly).

      Thanks for making this clear!

It's always wrong to say that you do not like to read. ;-)
