What's happening? Is büyük just a comparative marker here?

The comparative marker is the -dan on yaşından.

büyük means "old" here, or in the comparative (...-den büyük) "older (than)".

"older than eighteen years old" seems funny and unnatural, why not "more than eighteen years old" or even "older than eighteen years"?
