"пятьдесят пять лет"

Translation:fifty-five years

Can this not be fifty five years old or does it require a pronoun?

It could be, but only with additional context (e.g. if someone asked you "Сколько тебе лет?" and you omitted "мне" in the response). By itself it's just "fifty-five years," no more, no less.

Phonology question: Can anyone confirm my suspicion that the ь (мягкий знак) in пятьдесят is "silent", and has no bearing on the modern pronunciation? I can't see how to "palatalize" the т when it's followed by another alveolar stop, д.
