Catalan

After my passion for Italian faded so fast, I didn't think I would fall in love again so easily. Not so. Thus far, Catalan feels like learning British English vs American English, but I assume it's going to get harder. Anyone else get the "31 students" thing when you went to sign up or was I really the 32nd? Anyway, it's so much fun, and if you're learning Spanish it's good at least for strengthening your Spanish. (Awkward wording, but whatever.)

The course page was at "31 students" for a long time. I added last night, and it still listed "31 students" when I got up this morning. The count seems to have caught-up since then.

I was number 20-something. I don't think the numbers update with each person who adds, I think it does an update at certain intervals. I remember seeing people mentioning that sort of thing when Russian opened. Cool for all of us to be so early on the course!!

I remember that happening with the Russian course as well (all those years ago and I still remember) and you are probably right.

I wish I could speak Spanish sufficiently for the course :L I started the course briefly to hear the TTS and thought I was 32nd too, it's probably just a glitch :)

They only update the number of learners every so often. Right now, the course page shows that the Russian course only has 78.6K learners, even though the incubator shows 80.2K.

Well it was a nice moment anyway. I think the audio on this on isn't too bad (though I don't know what Catalan is supposed to sound like). It doesn't get randomly quiet or loud and weather you play the audio fast or slow the words sound at least similar. I know that isn't really a five star review, but I think they (whomever they is) did a good job.

In this moment we are 1290 people learning. The Incubator page updates this number every hour and the page you are watching every 24h I suppose.

EDIT we are 1520 now!

What is Catalan like? I would love to learn it if I were to go to that region of Spain. For now, Spanish and Portuguese is enough Romance languages for me. But the Catalans have a very intriguing history, especially during the civil war years. Glad to see it here on Duolingo.

You can think of Catalan as a mixture of Spanish and French, but with more Spanish mixed in.

It has a fair bit of Italian too - there was a lot of trade across the Mediterranean as these languages were forming.

That's true. I've done a little bit of the Italian course and there almost more similarities with Italian than Spanish. But half of those are probably actually similarities to French. It's like a combination of Italian, Spanish and French. Latin has a grandchild.

I always think of it as a Spanish-French-Italian hybrid.

With all the m's I wonder if it's similar to Portuguese at all.

It has almost the same grammar as french or italian. Western catalan has a pronunciation which is closer to italian, whereas eastern catalan sounds closer to french. Knowing spanish can help in learning some vocabulary. But actually the most similar language to catalan is occitan, a language spoken, amongst other places, in a wide area in the south of France.
