Stabilized Progression!

As you might have seen in the steadily increasing percentage mark of the Romanian course, we have managed to stabilize progression!
Some of the things we did over the last 2-3 weeks...

1) We have passed the 1,000 words mark!
2) Over the last two weeks, we have worked on (and finished) two grammar lessons along with two vocabulary lessons (4 lessons in total)!
3) We have also started writing helpful notes for each lesson.

I am also announcing that we will be posting new updates and progress reports more frequently. They will let you know our current words count and progress, as well as what we have done over the last couple of days/weeks, and things of this nature.

If you have any additional questions/comments, you can find us on the forum here

Birinci aşamanın sonuna doğru / Towards the end of the first chapter / Vers la fin du premier point de contrôle

Merhabalar,

Hello everyone,

We've almost completed the first checkpoint of the course French for Turkish Speakers. At this point, I find it beneficial to share some details about the course with you. First of all, this course is not the translated version of French for English Speakers course that already exists on Duolingo. The two courses don't even go hand in hand. The words that are taught are different (obviously the simple words such as table or chair are taught in both courses, but in advanced skills, the vocabulary will differ,) and the grammar is taught in a different method and in a different order. We're preparing this course for those whose native language is Turkish and who have never learnt a foreign language before, which means, if you speak English and/or German, obviously these two languages will help you, but if you don't, it's no problem at all since it only means that you're the exact target audience for this course. This also means that if there are those who started doing, have done some or a lot of or have already completed the French for the English Speakers course, they will equally benefit from this course, because not only will they find the opportunity to learn new words and expressions, but if they have any doubts or problems with any part of the grammar, be it of French or Turkish, they will also find the chance to have a different approach to those concepts. Long story short, we're aiming this course to be original and one in which everyone can learn something new.

Team "FR for TR", you have earned this week's Star Update Award because you have provided your update in three languages, including English, the language of this post! You have demonstrated what the Duolingo contributors do best - translate!

(There are a few more updates to be added, but I have seen them before making this call).

Progress Update #8

Cześć!

As you may have noticed, the course progress is “stuck” at 99%. However, that does not mean that the work on the course has stopped or slowed down.

Nearly all the words we want to have in the course are already implemented into the course. We are working our way through the tree trying to find and fill any gaps in the taught vocabulary. There is also some testing and fixing going on. We have to double-check the hints and possible sentence translations to make sure that everything is correct and consistent.

The TTS that is going to be used in the course is already up and running in our testing environment. We are satisfied with the speech quality and cannot wait for you to hear it!

And last but not least, we have a new contributor – please welcome neczka!

Dziękujemy! Stay tuned.

Después de 6 meses de duro trabajo, hemos conseguido terminar el curso de catalán para hispanohablantes. Pero aquí no termina el trabajo. Me gustaría darle las gracias a todo los miembros del equipo catalán. Si hemos tenido el curso en tan poco tiempo es gracias a ellos. Ha sido un placer trabajar con todos ellos.

Another Excellent Week

Thanks to Glenn, one of our newest contributors, we have had a very good week. Another 1,700 sentences this week. We have now written over 8,000 sentences and added almost 1,300 words in total.

We are around 65% of the course completed (so a 15% increase this week). We've adapted almost every unit from the Welsh for Adults courses we've been using. This is the equivalent of four years of two hours a week evening lessons or 120 hours of tuition.

We'll now be concentrating on extending the current units and adding units which are more focused on content rather than teaching in order to extend the overall word count of the course.

Many congrats to the Catalan from Spanish team for completing their course! The course is awesome so far!

And, what are the Welsh taking?? Whatever it is, I want some. How can they go this fast?? :D It's amazing! I'd take Welsh just to have a dragon next to my name. Good luck to them, can't wait for the course!

The Polish team has come back from the dead. It's gonna be awesome! They already have their TTS, so it shouldn't be too long till beta.

Thanks for posting, Jiten!

In the set of Windows keyboards that one can access, I've found "Polish (Programmers) Keyboard" to be the most logical and easiest to adapt to of any of the foreign language keyboards I've used.

To make a letter with an accent, hold the right alt key and press the letter. This works for ę, ó, ą, ś, ł, ż, ź, ć, and ń. The only exception is ż and ź: ż is alt-z, and ź is alt-x.

Duolingo "%" complete goes after the amount of words complete... if a team decides to edit some lessons and add more words, the number of words they have increases and until they add the amount of sentences required for the extra words, the percentage will decrease... this doesn't mean that they "fell"...

Congratulations to Team Catalan! I have tried your course a bit and I liked it... being in Spanish was no problem but keeping the 2 languages (or even Portuguese) separate in my head for the translation (even very simple things like un hombre -> un home) was confusing. Think I have enough Romance in me for now.

Still, looks like a good course. Shame about the TTS, though.

Also congrats Team Korean! Been a long time coming, but it is very nice to see an East Asian language exit the Beta.

Also also, Team Welsh is crazy and their progress is insane.

Congrats to Team Catalan and Team Welsh!! I am hoping Polish reached Beta this week. Apparently, some people already have the Russian Golden Owl....

Does the incubator/Phase 1 have a limit of 30 courses at the same time?

      November 23, 2015

      https://www.duolingo.com/fr224

I don't think there's a concrete limit, but each course requires members of the Duolingo staff to guide it along, so they can only do so many at a time.

Your translation for the second announcement is off. I'll fix it:

Cheers, I suppose that does make more sense. as I understand it,can't опытный have more than one meaning? I suppose "experimental" isn't totally wrong, in the sense they are being trialled as a moderator? https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D0%BE%D0%BF%D1%8B%D1%82%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B9

      https://www.duolingo.com/Shady_arc
      1. опыт = эксперимент = experiment
      2. опыт = experience

So, you have опытный образец (test sample) and опытный модератор (experienced moderator). Опытный in its experimental meaning can only mean "experiment-related, intended for use for experiments". Since humans are usually not repurposed for experimental use anyhow, it is not used with them.

Team French for Russian seem to be going at warp speed - thanks for the updates, Tamuna, it's like a lil random Russian reading practice!

Has Hungarian been cancelled? No offense or anything, I understand if it takes a while, I'm just anxious for it because I'm part Hungarian. Thanks for the update, keep 'em coming!

No it is not. They posted an update a week ago saying that they are going to make steady progress when they will stabilize the course. So the team is still active. I am worried about Yiddish and Klingon

I am also. I so want to learn Yiddish, but they have done nothing.

I know! I was so excited when I first saw Yiddish in the incubator, because I don't know of ANY good resources to learn it... but there have been no updates for four months and (last time I checked) the contributors don't seem to be replying to people's questions. If they've put the course on hold, for whatever reason, I just wish they'd make an announcement and say so! And maybe that would attract the attention of other potential contributors, who could try to help with whatever problems they're having :/

Perhaps I can learn enough French to learn Yiddish through the Assimil course and then work on the Duolingo one. :)

@lindakanga I hope that the Duolingo course comes out before that. If it is indeed necessary to lean Yiddish in the fashion I am proposing, I will not know enough to contribute for a long time.

I was not being super serious.

Duolingo is currently in the process of renegotiating with the Klingon High Council after a cargo transport was found to have Federation officers onboard while crossing the Klingon Neutral Zone -- it caused quite a spillover politically and they've retracted their support of Klingon linguists.
