Using "on" instead of "nous"

What is the correct way to use the "on" instead of "nous" in a conversation? Because I heard that "nous" is practically obsolete these days in France.

I wouldn't say obsolete: I use it often. ;) But in colloquial conversation you can (and we do it) use the "on" form.

- If writing: Nous avons le lait.
- I speaking colloquially: On a le lait.
- I speaking not colloquially: Nous avons le lait.

As a non-native speaker, I find that whether I use "nous" or "on" depends on whether or not I can remember the "nous" form of the verb. ;)
