The voice for the Dutch course has incorrect pronunciation!

For fun I took a test to test my skill at Dutch, I am Dutch so I speak, read, and write Dutch fluently of course. But I found that the voice speak Dutch in either a Brabant's accents or a Limburg's accent! Which is incredibly strange because those are very particular accents. I couldn't understand some of the things she was saying (and I'm Dutch!)

She should speak common civilized Dutch (algemeen beschaafd Nederlands) which is the proper accent to learn Dutch in because it's neutral, clear, and the way that common Dutch sounds.

I'd be happy to help out! I am a Dutch actrice so I of course speak common civilized Dutch, in case you need a voice for this.

LOL.

I am a native Dutch speaking Belgian, with a Brabantian accent, and I feel that the voice's accent is quite Hollandic - a bit posh, too.

It's actually a bit too Hollandic to be comfortable to my ears... :-)

My husband who is Brabants also cannot understand that computer voice. I just ended up switching it off.

I have been learning dutch for 4 months now and even now I can still enbd up running in to trouble trying to understand what they were trying to say. Nevertheless the dutch team has contributed to helping us understand at least the very basics. As for me, I use dutchpod101.com to acquire the articulate dutchy accent.. :)

The Dutch team are aware of the problem and are trying to come up with a solution. However, they need help from Duo to be able to change the voice. In fact, they've picked one voice out that is better. I used Forvo a lot when doing the Dutch tree to help hear how Dutch is actually pronounced.

If it's any consolation, the English voice is terrible too - I've had to listen three and four times to some phrases to make them out and I speak more or less standard English. I don't know what chance non-native speakers are meant to have.

Yep same here! And I'm also native Dutch. Poor quality of recordings. :(

I took Dutch at a university, with a native speaker of the language, and this course does not sound like his spoken Dutch at all! Please replace the current spoken examples with Dutch as we would encounter it in everyday conversation.

The problem is that the pronunciation differs from dialect to dialect, just like New York English is different from Texas English is different from London English is different from York English.

I believe that the voice that is being used is a good middle ground. To me, it sounds the way a typical upper class Dutch character speaks in tv shows...

I do not agree with you. We have many dialects in Dutch but the voice is just wrong sometimes. Pronouncing a v as an f and vice versa

Yep. In some areas the pronounciation of S and Z are also switched. It is not proper and correct.
