Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Best idea for Duolingo. (upvote so duo can see! pls)

I was thinking for a 1 v 1 language game that you can play against friends for lingots. If you think that this is a good idea and you would want to play this, comment and upvote please! Also, if you feel you have another idea that would make it better, please comment it below! Thank you.

From what I've read here in the discussions, there used to be something like this in the past, then they removed it. I don't know the reasons, but if they decided it wasn't worth it, it isn't very likely they would add it again.

Yup. It was known as the 'duels' or something. Oh god, I don't even remember. It was actually nice, I don't know why it was taken off.

seem to recall that the issue with the old contest type things was the tension between the gaming priorities and the straight language learning priorities of Duolingo. Making this a one to one thing might be a way to get around this. I could, for example, wager some of my rather useless lingots. Right now there is a vestige of that. In the lingot store I can do a double or nothing bet that I can keep going a seven day streak. Why not have the possibility for one-to-one wagers there? I could, for example, mileshyatt, offer you there a ten lingot wager that I would get more points in the next week. Having such an option available this way, would mean that those not involved in the wager would not even need to know it is happening. So, if being competitive worked for us, we could exercise that trait to our hearts' content without it affecting the experience of other Duolingo users. Bigger picture here for me is this: at some point Duolingo is going to get big enough that it is going to need to break through to a realization that it is a community of communities and what motivates one group, does not another. So, what motivates me (person interested in getting as fluent as possible in one language), is not what motivates the person who likes to creates new personal bests for how quickly to finish trees, and then this is very different from the person for whom getting 20 points a day is required homework for a language class. At some point, it seems to me, Duolingo will need to find more ways to move beyond its current same for everyone approach. Private challenges could be one of these.

Not a bad idea. You just have to make sure that your friend is on at the same time. How would Duolingo check that?

thank you for your insight, that brings up a very good point, there could be a system in which it tells when someone is online or offline, also, if you wanted you could play with random opponents. :)

They had this already. It was called "Duels" and it was super fun! It actually got me using the app again, but for some reason they discontinued it. Sad.

Awesome idea! If it's not against the rules, you should post it on a mod's stream. Would it be where they ask questions to both people and the first to answer it wins?

Thank you! :) to answer your question, yes, it would basically be that, except there will be things like multiple rounds and a timer and such. I was also thinking about a ranking system, where it also shows how many 1v1s you have won.
