The Bulgarian language

Hi, I would love if you guys could create a course for Bulgarian. I have a girlfriend who is Bulgarian. I love to be able to speak to her and her family in Bulgarian. Also it is one of the oldest languages and I think it is important that it is kept alive.

P.s its great that you have a course for Irish

Regards,

Reamonn

Hey! Duolingo is (generally) pretty good at listening to language requests from users, provided they get enough support (just look at Irish, Swedish, Welsh, Esperanto and several others that were started after they gained support in the forums). But, if you're going to gather support, you better do it right!

First and foremost, find some native Bulgarian speakers (or native English speakers who are also fluent speakers of Bulgarian) and get them to apply here: https://incubator.duolingo.com/apply. You can find some native Bulgarian speakers here, or you could ask a native speaker you know in real life :P

Secondly, you need to build up some support for the language course on Duolingo! Collaborate with other users who are enthusiastic about Bulgarian (like this user who makes Bulgarian lessons in the forums). Maybe make a post about why people should learn Bulgarian or talk about what is interesting about the language. Mainly just try and get as much support as possible from other users.

Finally, be patient. Phase 1 of the Incubator is almost at its highest capacity ever, so it may be a while before more languages are added, and other languages are in high demand already (like Finnish and Icelandic, let alone Japanese, Korean and Chinese. There are also courses in demand for speakers of other languages, like French for Dutch speakers, or Russian for German speakers). It may take some time before you get a response from Duolingo, but hold in there! They'll probably add Bulgarian eventually :P

You can keep an eye out here: https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/bg/en/status to see if it's added :)

I absolutely would love to see a Bulgarian course here, however, I think your absolute best resource is already in your lap; a real life native speaker and her family. By all means campaign for a course here, and I hope we get it, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth :)

Interesting, you are the second person to say that recently. I would support this, of course, and even probably take it.

I would be interested in it, I want to learn as many Slavic languages as I can, and Bulgarian is the oldest!

I hope they make one! Isn't it a pretty easy language to learn?

As far as Slavic languages go, it's probably somewhere in the middle. Unlike Polish, Russian, Czech, etc., Bulgarian doesn't have a case system (in this respect, it is more similar to English than those other languages mentioned). However, the verb system in Bulgarian is reputed to be extremely complex and nuanced (e.g. four evidentials, three moods, aspect, etc.).

Okay. I think that more Asian and Slavic languages should be added because Duo is mostly Indo-European languages. Thanks for commenting.

I'd love to see more Slavic languages, but Slavic languages are Indo-European.
