私は食べ過ぎました。(この文を__に訳しなさい)

Welcome to the 32nd Daily Translation Game! Try and translate this sentence into your language. As usual, I started us off with translating the english sentence into Japanese. You can choose any language you like of course (One you know or are learning), and is not limited to duolingo languages! You can also translate it into 2 or more languages if you are up for the challange! The purpose of this game is for good practice, and of course fun. It will also be cool seing this sentence in other languages, and we can help each other out if we make a mistake, or just learn something new! :D Today's requested sentence is

I ate too much food!

Today's sentence was request to be on this day by user UneJamKuqEZi! If you want to request a sentence, you can do so in my stream! It is because of the previous thanksgiving feasts!

Now, for my sentence I wrote "I ate too much" because I think it is already implied...

So I guess an alternative version of my sentence could be ...

私は食物を食べ過ぎました。

I THINK, NATIVE SPEAKERS ARE WELCOME TO CORRECT THIS ALTERNATIVE

As always, If you submit a comment written in another language, like I did mine, please write it in the romanization so others can hear what it would feel like!

Old Norse (What a surprise xD): Ek át of mjǫk mat

Fuþork: ᛬ ᛂᚴ ᛬ ᛅᛏ ᛬ ᚢᚠ ᛬ ᛘᛁᚢᚴ ᛬ ᛘᛅᛏ ᛬

I'll add this time a Norwegian translation to compare:

Nynorsk: Eg åt for mykje mat

Bokmål: Jeg spiste for mye mat

Yeah, they are quite different. Nynosk is more conservative (more Norse words and less Low German and Danish) and I love it because it feels more Norwegian. Nevertheless I know bokmål better because there are much more material out there to learn it. I try to get exposure to both written standards and several dialects at the same time

Nynorsk does indeed look more like Old Norse. Is spoken Norwegian closer to Old Norse than Swedish or Danish? I know Icelandic and Faeroese are.

That's a tricky question. All three are far from Old Norse, but take into account that what you might refer to Old Norse is western Old Norse, which is the dialect spoken in Norway and Iceland in the middle ages (and most of the literature is written in this dialect). In this case of course Norwegian is closer to Old Norse. East Old Norse would be closer to modern Swedish and Danish, but still too different.

I think that you mean two written standars. Norwegian has always been a group of dialects but the name is more cultural/political than linguistic (one can go from western Norway to eastern Sweden and going down to Denmark and the people of one town will understand the people from the next one.

The thing is that during the Danish occupation of Norway Danish was the official language and it affected the eastern part of the country, especially Oslo and other rich parts. With the independence of Norway and nationalist romanticism Ivar Aasen developed a "pure" Norwegian written standard based on the most conservative western dialects (Landsmål, which evolved into Nynorsk today). On the other hand the Danish spelling evolved into a more Norwegified written standard, called Bokmål. Both spellings are official today and it is obligatory to learn both at school.

People will argue that the majority uses bokmål, but it's also true that most of the people in Norway speak either a dialect closer to Nynorsk or a dialect which is not similar to any of the two spellings.

Я наелась (слишком много питания). It's been way too long, I think I remember it right, but, I am not sure if наелась/наелся would be sufficient on its own to imply the too much food bit... But it is one of several phrases I used a lot in Russia, because otherwise intended to get fed till I was full to my eyeballs 8-o (Я сыта, I'm full, was another).

ya nayelcya (m)/nayelas' (f) slishkm mnoga pitaniya

Sorry, my transliteration is worse than my actual Russian!

Yes, that would probably work, too, I am just trying to remember a verb I knew once upon a time that contains the idea of having eaten too much/done something to excess built in. I suspect there are several different ways of saying it. I know I used to have a good half dozen or so ways of saying I'd had enough to eat/was no longer hungry purely out of necessity.

If I remember correctly, the prefix на- coupled with the reflexive ending -ся means to have done something enough or to excess. If I'm right - big if - then я наелся/я наелась might be sufficient on its own to express the idea of having eaten too much. But... I don't remember :-/ and I can think of three different words for food and couldn't for the life of me figure out which was best 8-p probably attempting it at stupid o'clock didn't help.

I live with a Russian so I hear it every day and he often says he's full. I've been surprised that so far I've known all the vocab but disappointed at how much I've forgotten about case endings. I think I've just got used to mumbling the ends of words over the past few years. Having to write it is fantastic practice.

Lol. Actually it is just correct not to type a "third tone" on "了“ or "的” in most cases, meaning that you should pronounce it quickly and lightly. And it is correct here as well... so you had got it just right.

Oh la, I've already missed a lot of these! Well let me make a Dutch translation:

Ik at te veel (voedsel)

This is the literal translation, but it's kind of odd as in Dutch it would basically imply that a person has been eating too much for over a longer period in the past. The more correct sentence would be:

Ik heb te veel (voedsel) gegeten

This i more translated as: "I have eaten to much food". "Voedsel" (food) is kind of already implied in the sentence, but you can say it, altough it's not common in everyday speech.

Français: J'ai mangé trop de nourriture

Pour info, simplement dire j'ai trop mangé serait plus naturel, car il est implicite qu'on parle de nourriture ;)

Oui, on peut dire ça aussi. Mais ça n'a pas une connotation aussi "négative" que trop. Dire qu'on a bien mangé signifie effectivement qu'on a mangé en grande quantité, mais on ne regrette pas ;)
