How to learn new words after finishing skill tree?

If I'm sitting on 1500 words, and I want to hit 2000, how do I do that if I've finished my skill tree? The number of words I've learned has remained unchanged despite doing lesson practices and immersion.

Cheers!

You can't add any words to you Duolingo vocabulary, but of course this does not mean you cannot learn new words! The easiest way to learn new words is reading. The more you read, the more words you know, even if you don't try to memorize them. Immersion is also good to learn new words.

After you finish the tree (i.e. complete a basic course), it is time for you to go from active learning to absorbing new stuff and improving your language skills by practice.

I think it's a limitation of the system, so you can't learn more than that on Duolingo. Try using other resources, like Memrise. Of course, if you look to increase the displayed number of words on Duolingo (1,500), it won't change, but it's the knowledge that matters, not the numbers, isn't it?

Many people use a free flashcard program called Anki to store words they encounter and want to learn.

Personally, I find that at this point, I learn words better just from encountering them in native materials than using programs, flashcards, etc. My vocabulary has increased greatly just from watching telenovelas, listening to music, and reading in Spanish.

It's probably a limitation in the duo system. If you want to keep the language you just learnt fresh, you have to keep practicing (surprise) and vary it. You can for example watch spanish movies, documentaries, read books, webpages or you can makes friends from Spain to talk with. The expensive way is to take a travel to Spain. Vacations in for example the Canary Islands is ridiculously cheap (around 1500 DKK when they need to fill out seats in the flight etc, + it's all-inclusive). 1 dollar is 6 DKK. Believe it or not, i teached myself english and the only reason i still speak this language after 6 years, is because i practice every day. Well after all it is english, they teach us from 3rd grade, they get us epals and stuff in school. Not that it helps much. I actually speak english more than my native language (danish).

Read, read, read. Look through the articles in the immersion section, even if you don't yet have the confidence to begin editing. Look up any words you come across that you don't know. I use wordreference.com because it shows words many different contexts, and you can find forum discussions about vocabulary and grammar.
