Is there an alternative usage out there of which I am unaware? Please enlighten me. I am offering lingots for the wittiest explanations as to why this might be considered an offensive word, because it seems to be on Duolingo's reject list for immersion and no one will tell me why. Is it so shocking that no one dare explain?

I can't believe they don't accept "jungle". XD

I mean, I hope it is just a mistake. I understand that in the slang it can also have other meanings (including "hairy vagîna" by the way), but if we had to keep out every single word with a potential offensive slang meaning, I really don't know how many words could be used. duolingo is a bit of a puritan site.

I suspect the word has racist connotations. It's a sort of non-PC word for rain forest. These things seem to be much more fraught yon side of the Pond.

Something to do with "jungle" being used to denote inner city areas which are presumably disproportionately inhabited by black people.

The etymological root of “jungle” is Sanskrit जङ्गलः ‎(jaṅgalaḥ), meaning “arid or sterile region”. Duolingo must be trying to prevent the use of 1984-style “war is peace” definitions, where a lush tropical humid forest is described as an arid or sterile region. Similarly, a “pancake” is in no way a cake with pans among its ingredients.

i guess they also don't accept "pisello" (pea) in italian immersion, since it can also mean "wìlly". and we could make a list of such words for each language.

Well, I suspect that this is not the reason, and this is definitely not witty, but boys in early adolescence at least in the past have considered the term a synonym for the patch of hair that prompted the terms "pubescence" and "puberty" (from pubesco, the Latin inchoative verb meaning, "to begin to grow hair"). Couldn't think of any printable ways to be witty about this.

Jungle could be the j -word. Pancake could be the p-word. Margaret Thatcher could be the m or the t word. We could come up with a whole alphabet of prohibited Duolingo words.

The only truly offensive use of jungle that I can think of is as part of a very nasty racist term for a young black woman but if you ban jungle because some low life has misused it, then surely its partner word should also be banned ...... Has anybody tried to upload any Beatrix Potter stories?

I know this comment isn't witty but I couldn't think of anything humorous about either racist slurs or Brave New World type censorship. Sorry!

As for other questionable texts, surely, Duo should also consider banning Mother Goose and as for The Little Goose Girl, well, I shudder to think!

For Jolynne and these who are aware of migrants problem : The Jungle Library -A makeshift library has been set up at the migrant camp at Calais [in Northern France, in front of England]. They need more books : “I wanted to start something that offered real, practical help. Many people here are well-educated — they want to get on and they want books that will help them read and write English, apply for jobs, fill-in forms”, said the teacher Mary Jones.

That is a wonderful thing. If you heard about the riots in Ferguson Missouri, the library was one of the few places that stayed open during the rioting. It was a safe meeting place and a refuge. The townspeople and others were so moved that the library experienced a large increase in donations. Vive les bibliothèques.
