Good Russian TV Shows?

Hi! I was wondering if any one knew of some good Russian TV shows/ movies. I'm trying to improve my listening skills so I thought this would help : ) thanks!

Mosfilm has some really good classic movies on their Youtube channel. Most of them with subs https://www.youtube.com/user/mosfilm/playlists

Is it possible to find ratings for these? Are Soviet movies rated?

Yes, of course. You may look the films up on KinoPoisk, for example.

Thanks for the link, I think we're meaning something different by ratings though. I mean do they have ratings like Universal, Parental Guidance, 18+ kind of thing. Or does that site have that and I'm just looking in the wrong place?

EDIT: I think I found it. Is that what возраст is?

I am spoiled enough to have envisioned this development; I just hoped you weren't ;)

Look at the line that says "возраст" (age). I don't know what references they use to assign these but, I think, these are approximately right. Probably, not everything with 0+ is really toddler-safe; but it is precise enough for your purposes, right?

Generally, I think, most popular Soviet-era films will not include anything really indecent. However, I do not think they treated full frontal smoking and drinking as serious business back then (especially if the character is of a kind quite likely to be a smoker), so if you try to avoid this, better check with someone who watched the film before.

Sorry... I did watch it but it was more than a decade ago, so my memory might be blurry. I cannot remember anything shocking there. You are correct assuming that scenes of war might have affected the rating. Or maybe it is quite imprecise, trying to stay on the safe side. I think a 12-year-old can watch it though there is no guarantee the kid won't find it long and boring (also, it is in Russian with snippets or French).

Theron126 -- I haven't seen the whole film (or film series, depending on how you view it) of Война и Мир. However, it strikes me that the rating would be for war violence -- of the parts I've seen, there was nothing that I'd mind my kids (ages 3.5 and 5) seeing if they walked in the room. I doubt they would find such a long film entertaining (though my daughter, age 5, would love the ballroom scenes), but there's nothing objectionable from what I saw.

Thanks! Is it possible to find out more about why the ratings were assigned? E.g. the Soviet Война и Мир movie is rated 16+, is that just due to war violence?

Thanks for the advice! I watch a lot of the British black and white films from WWII, it's safe to say that they didn't much mind "full frontal smoking and drinking" either :-)

I immediately thought of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96dQnfZFqws

I watch the Zavolokins' show "Играй, гармонь!" on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkpPl0jbW7ybRT_gdueuAkg/videos

Comedy tv series.Easy to comprehend and very interesting to watch :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl27w1hsswY

    PS: the second one rules!

    Екатерина is really good :)

I was about to suggest it, I watched it this summer and I totally loved it!

Have you been able to understand that show with the duolingo vocabulary or did you use subtitles?

Вечерний Ургант is very popular russian show. КВН is popular too (but now квн is worse than it was). here rafikov has already reccomended mosfilm channel, i recommend to see there "двенадцать стульев" (12 chairs),"иван васильевич меняет профессию" etc.

Any of those would require a good level of comprehension and cultural immersion. Would be pretty much useless to a novice.

Not Russian - Ukrainian show, but on russian language: https://www.youtube.com/user/OreliReshka/featured

@chocolate, ranetki on hulu is my current show. I wish it had the option to turn off the subtitles :/.

I thought Leviathan was a powerful film with a lot of useful Russian language. Some sexual scenes (though nothing gratuitous). Dark though.

Silver spoon on Netflix is really great cop show.

Netflix has a show called The Method, which is in Russian and subtitled in English. hands down the best show I've ever watched, and helped me understand some things about the country too.
