What are all of the ways 'zij' and 'zijn' are used in Dutch?

Zij is either "She" or "They".

  • She = Zij is een meisje. (She is a girl.)
  • They = Zij zijn gek! (They are crazy!)

Zijn could be "Are" or "His", or "Its"

  • Are = Zij zijn gek! (They are crazy!)
  • His = Het is zijn boek. (It is his book.)
  • Its = Een boek en zijn kaft. (A book and its cover)

I hope this helps. :)

Right right!! Zet opzij is "put aside" i think.. Didn't think of the possibility of separating "op" and "zij" in this case... Interesting...

Another possibility: the subjunctive (aanvoegende wijs) of the verb 'zijn': "Het zij zo." ("So be it.") (However I don't remember the subjunctive being part of the tree.)
