When you are talking about the kind of weapon one likes best to use, it is 'the spear'. When you are talking about what weapon in a collection of different weapons one likes best, e.g., estheticaly, it would be 'a spear'.

    Spears compare to swords like rifles compare to pistols. One on one the former is always going to beat the latter, but smaller weapons still have their niches.
