yes in this context it can use both words, but instead of saying "esto es una broma" i would say "una broma" o "un chiste"

Is there a context where you could only use chiste?
chiste means: when somebody say a joke eg: "Why did the blonde get excited after finishing a puzzle in 5 months? Answer: The box said 3-5 years! wissen"--- this a "chiste". even though you can use "broma" too, but it is not as common as "chiste" (in this context) just like this post. in fact this post is a "chiste" too. now broma: mmm I am going to try explaning it. when you are kidding to somebody. eg A: you look fat. B: are you serious? A:ajaja just kidding--- this is a " es una broma" I decided explaining it with examples because in english only exist "joke"

Thanks for clarifying; I had the impression that chistes were something you told and bromas were something you did (and you could do it by saying something).
¿puedo decir que todos los chistes son bromas pero no todas las bromas son chistes?
asi es olvide ese punto broma es algo que tu hiciste tambien, jugarle una broma alguien, por ejemplo las bromas que hace bart simpson al director skinner y en ese contexto solo puedes decir "bromas" si todos los chistes son bromas pero no todas las bromas son chistes
