Weekly Incubator Update: Tracking Progress from November 29th to December 6th
Indonesian for English course enters the incubator
Congratulations and welcome to the course team!
With help from the awesome Duolingo team, Team Vietnamese was able to recover most of their lost work. I have revised their progress at 77% for the last week. They have made further remarkable progress and now are at 87%!
This seems to be the mantra for this week. As many as 11 courses have apparently gone retrograde! I have had to check and double-check that I was not making a mistake. But not to worry, because the overall progress has improved to 1.42%. The median however is at zero.
Thought for the week

Here's what the contributing teams have said during the last week:
(For Phase-1 and Phase-2 courses by default, and for Phase-3 courses per request).
Tangazo la Tatu
Pole pole ndio mwendo!
Hello, everyone! The Swahili-English Team has been a bit quiet with updates recently. That is primarily my fault as I'm the designated updater for our course. However, we have a methali, or proverb, in Swahili, above, which roughly means the same as “Slow and steady wins the race.” We are committed to creating the best course that we can which sometimes means re-arranging, re-structuring, and re-translating some items within the course.
Mama Rehema and Emilian have been inputting words and translating slowly in the two weeks since our last update. However, things were a bit slow-going because they were involved in a Peace Corps Tanzania training for language instructors; since we all work for Peace Corps Tanzania in different capacities, sometimes we have to divide our time among other tasks besides DuoLingo. Also, I have started annual leave, so I am currently traveling and haven't had much time to sit and work on the course. I woke up today in snowy, peaceful Japan, and decided to work a bit on the course. Here's a picture for you all to enjoy! In terms of the course, we are still estimating that we will have approximately 2,500 words. That would bring our rough completion percentage to 15%. We still have to add image exercises once the image system is working. We are also trying to add as many text exercises as we can to lessons to create more variation; variety is the spice of life after all! We have also been adding a lot of the grammar notes to different lessons. Everything for the grammar is written and compiled; we are working on formatting the text. Since that work isn't included in the percentage total, those types of tasks often go unnoticed but do indeed take some time!
Ninatumaini kwamba marafiki wamarekani wote wamestarehe siku yao ya kushukuru!
I hope that all of our American friends enjoyed Thanksgiving day!
Congratulations on earning your second (I think) Star Update Award. I am sure most Duolingoers, like me, enjoy reading your detailed updates. You are setting a fine example for the rest of the course teams!
First, I would like to thank you all of your thoughtfulness and supports that you showed to our course, our language and our team. The disaster was successfully contained with the help of Karint. She was able to recover more than half of what was lost and now, it appears that the course is back at 77% (in comparison with 92% originally). A great thank for the amazing Karint! Despite being the worst tragedy on Incubator so far, and there are much unrecoverable work, our team will not give up and will take it from here.
On the bright side, this minor setback will lead to a greater leap forward. The incident made me review the entire course from the beginning and realize what needs to be improved. Some keys of improvement in this "post-apocalypse" course:
- Improving hints
- Adjusting to more bite-sized lessons
- Redesigning introductory lessons
- Approachability to grammar and vocabulary
- Enhancing culture-related sentences
- Advanced vocabulary and grammar at the end of skill tree
Stay tuned! From the nuclear wasteland with love
Мы прошли третий рубеж!
Третий рубеж пройден! Спасибо огромное команде, вы отлично поработали! Теперь осталась только четвёртая часть, самая большая и трудная, но и с этим мы справимся! :) Спасибо всем!
Kurs bitti. Bir takım kontrollerden sonra bir kaç hafta içinde beta'ya çıkacak. Tabii ki şimdiden kursta bol alternatif eksikliği ve bir takım hataların kaçınılmaz olduğunu eklemek lazım.
( For the weekly update :) We are done! )

Vamos progresando | Ni progresas konstante
¡hola, lector! Saluton, leganto!
Great visual! Why would someone not try learning Esperanto after reading this? Congratulations, you share this week's Star Update Award with Team Swahili.
520 words, 26.0%.
Week 26: 22% complete, beta launch delayed
Dear friends, we are keenly aware of how much anticipation you have for our course. We are very eager to bring it to you as soon as we can. Later this month, we will be in a position to provide you with a revised estimated date for our beta launch. As you can imagine it will not make it to beta this year :(
Another milestone reached.
We've had another solid week of progress. We're up to about 75% of the course now written (up 5% this week), almost 1500 words added and almost 10,000 sentences created.
The difficulty in the next few weeks will be adding the final 500 words and correcting the mistakes.
Indonesian for English added to the incubator. Vietnamese team recovers from the loss of course content. The overall progress is back up at 1.42%!
The next update is expected on Sunday, 13th of December at 4:00 pm UTC.
Previous Update 22-Nov to 29-Nov
I mean, who am I not cheering for?
I think they added some interface strings to be translated, and that's why there is a negative progress for many teams. At least it looks like that. I can at least say that De-Tr is finished so there is no "negative" progress :)
Ah OK, that makes sense. Since the strings indeed have to be translated, I am cool with showing the progress the way it is. This is what it is!
Thanks (and lingots) :)
Polish is 99%-100% while Welsh is 75%. Betting for Welsh would be unintelligent.
Welsh has also made amazingly fast progress lately. It's superrisky, but with a multiplier high enough, people definitely would do it. I wouldn't. :P
Yeah, Duo would more than likely do a double-release rather than release Welsh first unless Welsh was absolutely ready to roll out and Polish hit one last major snag or another...
Polish was in the mid-70s when Welsh was at 0, at Polish has been 99% for over a week.
Yeah but that was due to the TTS and alphabet delay, for polish I don't get why it's taking so long... '-'
Hurray for Indonesian! According to Duolingo it should be out today! No, seriously Duolingo, just fix those things or get rid of them.
Yaaay, I've started to look forward to each new WIU. Such sexy statistics. ^^
Same here! Holding my breath for Polish so my partner can finally speak to some of my family!
The WIU is finally complete! Please check out the now added updates from the Vietnamese and Swahili teams.
Hooray for Indonesian & Vietnamese! Those happen to be the only two Asian languages I currently want to learn.
Wow, what's up with all of the down 1s? Glad to see Vietnamese up back above 80 and Welsh continuing to make fantastic progress.
Thank you very much! :) Our team tried hard this week! Thanks to all the members! :)
A heads up for this week's update. I will not be able to post the WIU on the scheduled time. I will be late by several hours.
Thanks for your patience in advance :)
Welsh is literally on fire, congrats to the dedicated team for making so much progress so quickly -claps-. Glad team Vietnamese has recovered well from their data loss :). I hope the Greek team makes some more progess soon, I'm eagerly waiting. :D
Has the Hungarian course set a record for the longest time spent in the incubator without a Beta release (yet)? It's hard watching all of these other courses enter the incubator and then depart into Beta. :'(
Well, every day that goes by without Hungarian, Romanian, and Polish being released means a shared new record for the longest time spent in phase 1.
Congrats to Team Vietnamese for recovering their back-up data, and this week's super progress! Another storming week also by the Welsh course - they'll be ready by the end of January at the rate they're going!
Go Vietnamese ! Soon the nuclear wasteland will be blooming love powered language paradise !
Tới Việt !
p.s. Does anyone else sort of miss the WIU Russian for English TTS/release date angst? Heck NO!
Hey jitengore, I love these WIU, they always keep me informed. I want to ask you if there is an archive you made where all of these can be found. Is there?
If there isn't, I can made one. I just need your first post when you first started this.
At the end of every WIU, you'll see links to some of the previous ones. Starting here, you should be able to find them all.
There is almost an archive on the anniversery post. It was sometime after June this year but before now.
Any word from the Greek for English team? They posted two weeks ago about their topic page but that hasn't gone up yet and nothing else from them since.
What's going on with Greek? First it was stuck on 34% and now it's moving backwards... :'(
