Russian answer in latin alphabet

I'm confused as to when I should use the latin alphabet or the cyrillic one in order to give an answer in russian. When the response text box says "Type in russian", sometimes I respond in cyrillic and my response is dismissed as wrong and the "correct" response appears in latin characters.

Personally, I don't see the point of writing russian in latin characters. Can you please fix this? I find this not only confusing but also irritating.

I find exactly the same problem with the Russian course. How are we supposed to learn Russian when everything is writen in Latin alphabet. I am sick of reporting this issue over and over again

There is a button in the upper left hand that you can use to switch between the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. Click it so it goes from Aa to Яя and you will have Cyrillic.

If you've got it set to use the latin alphabet, I don't think it accepts Cyrillic. I think you need to have it be set to Cyrillic to answer in Cyrillic.

I didn't know about the "Aa Яя" button. But although I never touched that button before, my answers in cyrillic where accepted most of time (perhaps 90%), so I still think that there is a problem. Anyway I will try it and see if it solves my problem.

Perhaps a suggestion: when we respond to a question, you should be able to figure out for yourself if the answer is in cyrillic or latin.

Thanks for all the answers!

Right. Once you switch to Cyrillic, you should be okay, seeing as you know how to type in Cyrillic already. Occasionally you'll be switched back to the Latin alphabet. Just return to using Cyrillic and carry on.

Is there a reason why the Latin is the default rather than the Cyrillic? It seems that is the basis for most of these complaints.

The only reason I know of is that Duolingo wanted it that way, over the protests (I have heard) of the developers of both the Ukrainian and Russian courses. Maybe Duo wanted people to be able to start right off without messing with Cyrillic.

Which, IMO, is stupid. If you can't read cyrillic, the language isn't particularly helpful. Plus, since there isn't a direct letter link, you end up having to make really bad sacrifices in the exact sound and meaning to try to spell it in english.

Agreed. But that's the way it is.

The course literally tells you about the Aa/Яя button when you start it.

It's a tiny popup and you can dismiss it by clicking OK.

Bad UI design. It definitely doesn't lead to informed choice.

It didn't when I started, so maybe it doesn't for everybody, or else they didn't until later.

I appreciate the effort to get this course together. Thank you, but would love to do in with the cyrillic alphabet. When is that coming?
