Surely the 1900s is a decade (1900 to 1909), as is the 1910s, 1920s, etc? The 20th century is a century.

In English it can be either: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1900s. Obviously it depends on the context. And if the sentence includes the word århundre then the context is century.

Danny Boodman T. D. Lemon "Novecento" thinks otherwise. =)

Yeah, so that's what I wanted to ask as well. If you say 1900-tallet do you mean the century exclusively in Norwegian or it can be either? Thanks.

So you never say "tjuende århundre"? (20th century)

They use both as i can see in wikipedia but there is difference for one year:"Det 20. århundre dekker årene 1901–2000, mens nittenhundretallet dekker årene 1900–1999."
