same question: why it has to be only "suo" and not "sua"? there's no way we can know the gender of the possessed thing without a context.

What is wrong with "E il sua, non il mio" for "It is hers, not mine"?

What, do you default to the masculine even if all there is is a feminine pronoun?

It refers to the same object, so the gender must match. La sua/la mia or il suo/il mio.
