Hi all,

Does anyone know about the progress of the hungarian course for english speakers? Is it close to beta (ie days) or months from it?

It is most likely months from going into beta. The course has been stuck at 80% for a long time now. I was going through Abenhakan's profile (One of the course moderators for Hungarian) and I noticed that he said the team is mainly focusing on the English for Hungarian course because there are more people learning English through Hungarian than there are people in Hungary, so they have to tend to all their reports and errors. I don't know when they will start focusing on the reverse course, but it doesn't seem to be anytime soon.

It's true that it was stuck at 80% for a long time, but if you take a look at the course's incubator page (https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/hu/en/status) you can see that they've started work again, so 80% is probably wrong by now. They just haven't told the percentage recently.

We can only hope they'll take us by surprise and report something in the nineties soon.

How come it says 99% done then?

That percentage is false, that measures how many words are translated. That could be wildly exaggerated. Here's an example. Pretend you are making a course.

You have 10 words in the course, the percentage is 0% because you haven't translated any yet. You translate one, and it goes up to 10%. Then if you add 10 more untranslated words, the percentage goes down to 5% or 1/20 words. Then, if you translate 18 more words, you go up to 19/20, which is up to 95%. You don't want to learn only a few words, you want to learn alot, so they have about 2000-3000 words in a course. So 1980 out of 2000 words is 99%. But, 198 words out of 200 is also 99%, so this percentage is completely wrong.

Thank you for the explanation. I think that the course team ought to be able to set the date and percentage
