Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Concern

I was very excited to use DuoLingo and so were the kids! However the school decided to close the students accounts because of a security issue.

Use of the program has raised a few concerns, however. There is a “chat”-like feature that students can use to add followers and post messages to them, which was not obvious when we researched the program. Because DuoLingo is not an application that is designed specifically for the school environment, the control tools that are normally provided with educational apps are not available. For example, there are no administrator accounts which can be used to set usernames and lock/unlock passwords, or turn features on/off based on grade level (such as the chat function). There are no teacher accounts with the ability to track students’ progress in one location. As a result of the lack of educational control features, we have decided to close access to students’ school-created DuoLingo accounts.

Can the duolingo come up with a school version?? PLEASE!! Thank you!

We will hopefully have this available in January.

I experienced the exact same thing that happened to macarena77. I wouldn't mind paying some money to block the chat room and all outside access for my students and to be able to monitor their activity and progress. I agree that it is the best program that I have seen and my students are begging for it. I wish it was available this fall (2014) to start the school year with it.

Any news on this?? It's been 6 months. The semester just finished and my school didn't let me use Duolingo and instead opted for the Cambridge platform which is nowhere as fun and engaging as Duolingo. My students keep asking when are they going to be able to switch to DL. I think a lot of teachers and students would benefit from these tools. Thank you very much.

I love DL as a learning resource and am very excited whenever I hear that school are using it. I wish this place had existed back when I was in school.

The chat features called the Stream, is mentioned in Duolingo's Guidelines. http://www.duolingo.com/guidelines (Located at the very bottom of the page).

While I am not aware of DL monitering the streams as a routine, if someone witnesses another person violating the Terms http://www.duolingo.com/terms (also at the bottom of the page) and/or Guidelines, they can file a report to abuse@duolingo.com The kinds of content that is appropriate or inappropriate to post to one's own or another's stream is outlined in either the Terms or the Guidelines. Under some conditions, DL will delete user accounts for abusing the streams.

If DL doesn't add an admin option, is it possible for the children's' guardians to sign wavers attesting that they will monitor their children's streams? That way, whether or not the students are allowed to follow other users can be dictated by the guardians?

Will we ever get some sort of stream back? I really miss being able to talk to the wonderful friends that I made on here, and it was one of the best ways to learn. I also really miss Immersion, but I'd rather have the stream back if it came to one over the other.

Although my students are adults, I am about a 1000% in support of a school version, or perhaps simply a teacher version. Although it focuses primarily on math, Khanacademy.com has the option of signing up for a teachers account which provides superb options for setting up ones own class, and building into such class the specific skill for mastery which they want their students to learn, practice, and master.

Duolingo already has the framework which provides the language learning, practice, and mastery (even just releasing the Duolingo Test Center, SO COOL) with which students can master many micro and macro language skills. Now if only they placed this framework under the optional umbrella of teacher accounts with detailed information about our students achievements, then we would be able to fundamentally change the way language is taught, making it more student centered than ever before.

WOW! Just wow! I really feel for the kids who have been blocked from an amazing tool for the vague "risk" that they might encounter whatever it is you are afraid of! If they have access to GOOGLE the whole thing should be irrelevant right?

Agreed, I think it has a lot of value, but these are big concerns for teachers.
