If you have spare lingots (no, I'm not asking for any, I have plenty)...
...don't forget to buy the Christmas skills while you can if you have any interest in them. Most of us who have been doing Duolingo for a while have more lingots than we'll ever spend, so I thought I'd post this for anyone who doesn't know that the Christmas skills are only available for a short time (or that they're available now, as of this writing).
Students who have reached the required checkpoint for each language which offers the Christmas skills can get them in French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and German. I myself would have forgotten about this entirely had I not seen the thread at https://www.duolingo.com/comment/12297066 - hence, my friendly reminder. I would have been seriously irritated at myself for a full year had I missed out.
And for those who celebrate Christmas, I wish you all a merry one.
Thanks for the reminder!! I feel there should be a message sent to those who want reminders so they have time to level up and save up the 30 lingots for this, especially to those new to DuoLingo. I missed the entire window last year not knowing when it was available!. Thankfully, this year I finally have my Christmas skills to learn in my target language and leveled up in time in my "reverse" tree to also get the Christmas skill going from Spanish to English.
is there a way to get lingots faster i only have a few cause i just started playing
Once you hit level 15 for the translation tier that's a fairly easy way to get them. They removed the streak bonuses, but hitting new levels will get you lingots fast enough. There's also streak wagers. There are so few things to do with lingots that you'll find earning them becomes a lot less important as you go along.
I still have the streak bonus.
I think it was an a/b test for a while... though I thought that the test had ended and they had decided to give everyone the bonus?
Have a look in the lingot store - at the bottom, it says how you can earn lingots, and see whether it mentions something about keeping a streak for 10 days or not.
thanks but i only have 12 at the moment because i stupidly spent them on flirting
Thanks for the reminder. If anyone would like to "buy" the Christmas skills but doesn't have the required number of lingots, just message me as I have thousands I will never use and happy to help.
Hi, could I have a few?? I don't have nearly enough... :/ Thanks for the generous offer!
I'm not sure how to message you, so I'm posting here. I would love to have 18 if you can still spare a few. Those Christmas skills would be nice to have :) Thank you!
Sweet Mother Theresa on the hood of a Mercedes-Benz, thank you to those who gave me Lingots. I like, 40+ more. That's more than enough. Thank you so much.
The Christmas skills are only during the Christmas season. They go away shortly afterward and the ability to buy them comes a year later when it's the Christmas season again.
Okay, so that's how they work, thanks. Again though, why? What is the advantage of restricting access to this content that has been already created anyway? Seems more like an inconvenience for users than anything else.
You have a point. But I suppose it's made to seem like a novelty. Plus, I don't think anybody whether they have the skill or not is looking to study the skill a while away from Christmas. But then again, if companies make a profit on Black Friday, why don't they keep those prices all year round? In the end the market wants what the market wants.
I guess something like that has to be it. And you raise a good point with the timing and the interest.
But I can't stop myself from pointing out that the Black Friday analogy does not work when Duolingo is a completely free product. :D
Hahaa, true! Lingots are a form of currency after all. You got me on that one. :D
Thank you for mentioning which languages it's available for. I was going to wait until next year to start the German course, but I'll start now just for the Christmas skill.
did any of you give me lingots because i went from 18 to 40 in a couple minutes and bought the Christmas one
Bonus skills with extra vocabulary related to Christmas.
I've never done one myself but I imagine they will have words such as "Christmas", "elf", "reindeer", "mistletoe", or the like.
Thanks. I totally have to work overtime then. New as I am, I spent mine in Idioms and Flirting. Haha. Must. Earn. More. Lingots.
I'm kind of like you! I think I will eventually do Italian, so I just want to start it now just to grab the Christmas bonus and not have to wait so long for it to reappear again. But I already have too many languages and I don't want to confuse myself.
Granted, I can just get Italian now with the Christmas bonus, and leave it alone till I am ready next year. Oh the decisions! I'll likely wait till the next holiday season.
I knew that it would be available only for a period of time that's why I did not hesitate to buy it. Yay for me! Ha! Ha! But wait, I only have 1 space left for an extra skill. If I buy another one and then a new skill is available (let's say Summer themed one), would I be able to unequip an old skill and equip the *Summer one?
So far, I haven't seen other bonus skills with other languages yet. I assume that if there's a fourth bonus skill, a fourth space will pop up.
I also noticed that the language trees are specific with the language. For instance, with the Spanish tree, you can purchase bonuses immediately. But the newest version of the German tree (which I have), the bonuses are locked till you complete a certain number of courses. This is why I assume each tree is really customizable, and a fourth slot can open up if necessary.
I only have 21 at the moment so let's start the grind. Can someone tell me what's the best way to get lingots (sorry for the newbie question)?
I would say: studying.
2 lingots for every skill completed adds up after a while - though how quickly you can finish skills depends on how much repetition you need.
Also, the "double or nothing" wager can be useful (pay 5 lingots, get 10 back after a week if you managed to study every day) and the streak-related rewards if you have them - check your lingot store to see whether it mentions 1 lingot for 10 days in a row, 2 for 20 in a row and so on.
Especially at higher streak lengths (e.g. 25 lingots once you've had 250 days in a row) that starts to get significant. You'll have lingots coming out of your ears by then.
Also, Adjack is giving away 50 lingots each to the first 57 to comment on his post: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/12072542 . Post a comment there indicating you would like some as well - I think there haven't been 57 requests yet.
Thanks for the reply! Guys I'm blown away by this support, thanks for the lingots, it's sure as hell nice to be part of such a supportive community! Now onto the christmas vocab!
Spent my lingots on a quiz not realising the Christmas module would become available.
There should be a reminder (great idea :D. I only have 9 lingot's right now, how long does this Christmas option usually last?
Oh thanks for reminding me! :) May i have some Lingots for the Christmas skills too? Please, would be a nice duolingo christmas present ;)
Ask on Adjack's post -- see my comment to commedown further up for a link :) He's handing out lingots in sets of 50.
The Christmas skills was a lot of fun! Thanks for the reminder about it!
thanks for reminding us, it is a bit silly how you have to pay for the bonus skills because if you have just started and you want to learn a bit about Christmas in french then you can't because you can't afford it so then you have to wait another year.
