Slow Finnish - Chapter 8c - Mitä työtä teet?

Essiivi - Essive

The essive is formed with the suffix -na/nä. Words that end with -nen, end with -sena/senä in essive. Words that end with -s have all sorts of stems in essive.

  • poika -> poikana
  • tyttö -> tyttönä
  • nainen -> naisena
  • mies -> miehenä

Työskennellä - To work

  • työskentelen
  • työskentelet
  • hän työskentelee
  • työskentelemme
  • työskentelette
  • he työskentelevät

Työskennellä requires the essive.

  • Työskentelen pappina. I work as a priest.
  • Työskentelet kokkina You work as a cook.

Techinally the case ending for words ending in -nen is the same as for other words. The n-->s change happens in the stem and can be seen in all the other cases as well.

naine/n, naise/t, naise/n, nais/ta, naise/sta… I can't quite remember which cases you've already explained, but I suppose the pattern can be seen from this.

There's three stems: naine-, naise- and nais-.

Linguistically it's interesting how you analysed the stem+ending. This is how and why languages change: the people using the language stop seeing a connection that was perfectly obvious just a couple of generations earlier. But anyway, this way of analysing might be simpler for a learner to understand. In case people are using other sources, I thought to put this information here :)
