Może i może, ale z kim?

Jeżeli stary i może, to może z kimkolwiek, ktokolwiek zechce, bez względu na wiek. ;) ...Kto powiedział, że język polski nie może być tak melodyjny jak włoski?... :D

Is Hemingway popular in Poland?

Well, everyone should have heard of him, but how many people have read him, I have no clue.

If he is not part of the school curriculum, I would doubt that the turnout of people who have read him is higher than anywhere else in Europe. In the US, it surely is part of the curriculum, so that the turnout is obtusely higher. (Read, but not understood or not remembered as the pupils do not care about it)

Let's be thankful for any good author that is not ruined for millions by being forcefed to them in schools.

To be fair, I would have missed many classics if I hadn't been introduced to them in school. But I get your point.

old man and the sea should this be accepted?

Well, as this is just a phrase, I guess omitting the article is okay. Added.
