Looking for an Irish buddy
Dia Duit! I've been studying Irish for more than a year and have finally recognized that I really need a partner if I want to become fluent. I didn't know I picked a language that I would never find anyone to talk to in the 4th largest city in America. BUT apparently I have. It would be great to have someone to write or chat with.
You should be able to track someone down in Houston - while it's not typically considered a traditional "Irish American" city, it has an active GAA club, Irish Music classes, a Center for Irish Studies at St Thomas University, an Irish Networking group and a more traditional (read "old fashioned") Irish Society.
This page lists a contact for Conradh na Gaeilge in Houston, but I haven't been able to find any other source to confirm that.
There's also an honorary Irish Consul in Houston - you could give them a call and ask if they have any suggestions.
thank you so much. i will look a few of these up & hopefully ...find a person
I hang out with the Irish Footballers, but they hardly ever speak Irish. Even those with the thickest Irish accent, speak only English. So still working on finding a person.
Unfortunately, most of us are a lot more comfortable in English, and will only speak Irish if prodded, and then often only haltingly. But let people know that you're interested in speaking Irish, and someone may know someone who is more comfortable chatting as Gaeilge, and put you in touch. It's all about networking!
