Would someone please think of the children?

Would that be: 'Vil noen vennligst tenk på barna'?

It would be: "Vil noen vennligst tenke på barna?"

Why can't we translate this as "think about the kids"?

Context is everything. But in an interjection, the concern is very likely for the children, not an encouragement to picture them in your thoughts.

Oh, I see. Thank you!

How do you distinguish between the sounds of 'barnet' and 'barna'?

The two duolingo speakers are not exactly the same, even though they speak mostly the same dialect, so not strange it's confusing. But the key is the weight on the n. Bar-ne(t) vs. Barn-a(h).
