Streaks - the good and the bad

I've been away from Duolingo for at least a week or so, and that is becuase of this: 0 day streak. I had a streak that wasn't too long, but it's REALLY annoying to have to start from scratch. Streaks are motivating when you have them, but very discouraging when you lose them. Maybe you should be able to disable streaks? Anyone agree with me? I've seen a couple people who left or at least considered leaving Duolingo because of them. I'm not trying to complain, even if it sounds like it, but I feel that this should be brought to the attention of the community. Thanks a lot everyone.

Streaks should be replaced with total active days. That way you would never lose your tally.

That's actually a great idea.

I think "Total Active Days" would be a nice feature, and would help motivate users. It would not replace streaks though, as it doesn't provide the same motivation as a streak (which motivates people to not stop).

Maybe there could be an option to change between displaying streak or total active days, depending on the user's preference.

Personally, I would like to see the option to show both, along with any other numbers that could help motivation. E.g., average number XP/day, average number lessons/day, #lessons achieved over last 7 days , etc.

That last (#lessons over last 7 days) is one that the user can pretty easily try to raise by practicing more, so I think it might be a nice motivational number.

That's a good point. Perhaps just a general statistic page?

It's heartbreaking :(

All I do is 20 minutes a day to help me catch up, maybe try doing that?

Here's 10 lingots to keep you motivated :D (and maybe buy a Streak Freeze)

If you don't know how to use a Streak Freeze it acts like insurance for one day, for example if you buy it now you still have it until Duolingo calculates a day without progress, and automatically "deploys" it. I recommend you keep one for emergencies, but it only works for 1 day.

Thanks for the lingots and the ideas! Hope you keep your streak.

Also, if you don't know what a Streak Freeze is I edited the comment above :)

Sorry, I don't mean to say it rudely. I realize that it might come across as a little rude. Tone of voice matters a lot in language.

Yes, I lost an 120 day streak too. It was really annoying, but it happened to be the day Danish started, so I decided to throw myself in it and my new streak would be a streak of how many days I'd been studying Danish for. It worked.

But at any rate, I think it would be nice if it could be disabled since it was hugely annoying.

I purposefully lost my streak so that I could quit Duolingo! Sometimes having a streak makes you feel like you need to do Duolingo, even when you could learn better elsewhere at the stage you're at.

Now I'm learning Dutch by messaging my Dutch friends and by (slowly) reading novels written in Dutch. Duolingo was a fun start, but I find what I'm doing now to be much nicer.

But yeah, I agree that you should be able to disable streaks.

Good thinking--paying attention and realizing when the streak is not motivating the best time investment. Thanks for the tip!

Hey your streak is over a year. Cool.

What I am starting to do so I don't lose my streak is to buy a streak freeze so when I lose my streak I just use that to keep my streak alive. When I use it, I just buy a new one. Hope that helps.

I lost a streak of over 700 days recently; my own fault, I was busy and did not realise my streak freeze was used the previous day. I have started again, and will keep going, but it would be great if over two years daily work could be noted on my record somewhere!!

Two streaks I've lost (when paying attention), and one of them was one day short of a half year. See, it still still ticks me off! The best thing to do is get over it and keep going--just suck it up and deal with it, as one of my kids' wrestling coaches used to say. :)
