They're called serviettes in England and Canada, but napkins in the United States.

they are also called serviettes in Australia - I'm not sure if they are called napkins anywhere but the US. Napkins - more commonly called nappies are what we put on babies bottoms!!

I'm Australian; we were not permitted to use the word "serviette" as being gauche; the word was "table napkin". Fifty plus years later, I still use "napkin". Napkins and nappies are two different things; you wouldn't put nappies on the table
