It's actually incorrect to say 'gdzie' when you can say 'dokąd'. 'Gdzie' refers to a static location, while 'dokąd' refers to a destination.

True, although Duolingo is (mostly) written, including this particular sentence, so it should say 'Dokąd biegniesz?'.
Casual language isn't restricted into spoken forms. Short notes, chats, forums, etc. all use casual language. (and neither official language is restricted to written forms). The Doulingo learners are more likely to engage in casual conersations first, before learning to be more official and knowing nuances like these.
