Merry Christmas to All or "Glædelig Jul" as we would say in Danish

Merry Christmas to everyone here at Duolingo! May you all have an awesome evening and upcoming morning the 25th with your families and friends. I hope that you will all experience the wonderful Christmas peace covering the Earth.

I am just making pork rost and duck("flæskesteg og and") for my family, which almost all people in Denmark eat tonight. I hope many of you celebrate Christmas around the Earth in many different ways. Later my family and I are gonna dance around a Christmas tree while singing Christmas carols.(I know we danes are crazy). I am gonna play guitar for that wonderful time.

I am so happy to be part of such an awesome community here at Duolingo. I am happy to learn languages every day for FREE and I will soon get my second Golden Duo. So many great people have used many hours for us all to enjoy learning languages and cultures. It only will benefit us in so many ways in life. It is awesome to experience a community of dedicated people that are ready to help each other learning online.

Thanks to everyone here for a fantastic 2015. Merry Christmas, Glædelig jul, Frohe Weihnachten, Feliz Navidad, Joyeux Noël Christmas Mobarak, Gledelig Jul, toDwI'ma' qoS yItIvqu', Alassë a Hristomerendë, Krismasi Njema!

Il-Milied it-tajjeb! ~ il-Malti.

There's a Maltese Christmas tradition called 'il-priedka tat-tifel', meaning 'the preaching of the child'. A child gives the sermon at Midnight Mass in their local church. The child is usually between seven and ten years old, and takes weeks to learn the sermon. You can see one taking place here in Naxxar.

Just thought it's a nice tradition to share with you all.

That's very awesome! It must be hard practise to practice for weeks for only one sermon! Thank you for sharing. I myself went to church today to celebrate Christ-mas. I would like to visit Malta one day, it seem like a very nice country. They always have great songs in Eurovision.

Grazzi! Apparently, Malta is the most successful country never to win the Eurovision! The churches on the islands are really beautiful: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/6979767 .

I hope you enjoyed the service.

Yes I don't understand it either why they never win! Yes I can see that in your link, they seem very beautiful - astonishing architecture! I definately enjoyed our service, it was great to sing with hundreds of people to celebrate Christmas.

Really? I've always seen it as an "either or" type of phrase... I guess I'll stick to "Frohe Weihnachten" now from my favourite dialect, High German :)

https://www.duolingo.com/TrioLinguist

Perhaps this graph would interest you:

As you can see, Frohe Weihnachten has been the predominant form since 1960, in the written language at least. Both are fine :)

Edit: You may have to zoom in a bit, the picture is quite small - the blue one is for Frohe and the red for Fröhliche.

https://www.duolingo.com/JanetHallmark

Thanks for the info. Maybe the older style is still common in Texas because the German immigrants came in the 1800s. Or maybe it's because the German speakers I know are mostly my age -- definitely pre-1960 vintage!

https://www.duolingo.com/TobiasJacobsen

Haha, I would rather not try it as well. It doesn't sound nice when put in soap before eating!!! Nope, no lutefisk here, danes don't eat it - we have a better taste! I have heard about it from my Norwegian friends though.

https://www.duolingo.com/JonWhite12

Hi Tobias, I spent time in Aalborg, Denmark this past summer with friends and our Danish exchange student. We had an excellent time hatting her because of her graduation from gymnasium. Of course, there were many festivities having to do with the graduation that we participated in. We missed some of the fun because we couldn't speak Danish and did not want to impose on people to ask them to translate. Later our friends took us around the area showing us various local sites that included witch burnings, a Viking fair and an art festival in Skagen among many things. We had so much fun. You have a fabulous country.

https://www.duolingo.com/TobiasJacobsen

That is very cool to hear! Aalborg is a great city I have also been there myself 4 times in December. I live nearby. I also graduated myself from Gymnasium 3 years ago. Yes there are many festivities in relation to that, and it is much fun! Yeah okay, that doesn't sound so nice for you guys. You should just have asked them to speak English! Danes are not always good at speaking English around internationals, but they are generally good at English. 95% of the population speak English. That sounds like a lot of fun with those historical sites etc. I love to watch such kind of things myself. That is great to hear! You should learn Danish on duo, so you will be able to understand more Danish as you visit Denmark next time ;) Where are you from BTW?

https://www.duolingo.com/JonWhite12

You are right about Danes only wanting to speak Danish and that was the only minor negative of our trip. It stood out when we were the only ones not laughing when a joke was told. Our Danish exchange student spoke flawless English and participated on the Debate Team with terrific results here in the US. We are from the Dallas, Texas USA area in a town called Trophy Club and our exchange student lives with her parents in a town outside of AAlborg named Vadum. She is now taking a year off with her exchange student program(YFU) in an internship in Vienna and now speaking excellent fluent German. Once I become a little more proficient in Spanish my next language will be Danish.

https://www.duolingo.com/JonWhite12

Tobias, please come and visit. It is very hot in the summer as our exchange student had to immediately adapt to, but pleasant the rest of the year and we have guest rooms. The one thing I need not provided by Duolingo is conversation. A fluent speaker must think in the language that they are speaking and that is what I need work on. We converse regularly on Skype with our exchange student and she said that now that she is speaking in German all the time when she is talking to us she has to switch on her American English brain which takes a couple of minutes. You are right, many of my students are Hispanic and love to talk to me in Spanish and it is quite useful here in Texas. One thing about the internationals is that once you start them in English they love to speak it and they are so adventuresome in wanting to travel to any place exciting.

https://www.duolingo.com/TobiasJacobsen

That is sad to hear! I am myself trying my best to influence the community of danes on my international school to speak more English around the internationals.
That is so cool! I would like to go to the US myself. Dallas sounds like a nice state in the south. I actually know Vadum, because I have some friends who often got there. It sounds very interesting with the internship, I speak fluent german myself. I was in Bratislava Slovakia a year ago and we had the chance to go visiting Vienna on the way back, but our driver unfortunately didn't want to take that way home to Denmark. It is a very beautiful city indeed!

That sounds like a good plan, as you have so many hispanics in Dallas. It seems like your level is already quite high in Spanish! I also plan to learn Spanish after French, it is luckily a little similar.
