How did you know? I just updated my iPhone app (@8:30pm EST) and it has a new feature—Duolingo Coach!
that is unfair, why do some people have it and some don't. I've checked google store, there is no update :(
Hi Larisa! I updated my iPhone app through the App Store (iTunes). I don't know what google store is.
Okay well keep checking. I went to the App Store looking for something else and noticed an update was available for Duolingo but I had to try a few times to download it because it would kind of disappear when I clicked on it. I restarted the App Store app a couple times before I was able to download it. I don't know why I had to attempt so many times…it never happened before with any app. Perhaps, it wasn't meant to be downloaded yet. Well, I got it! And I suggest you keep trying :)
Luis said it's not on the play store yet, but there are going to be some other surprises :-D
So I assume this new feature does not effect those of us who don't/can't use the app?
Hi Princess-GLG! I suppose although, I do think the Duolingo Coach feature will be added to the website eventually. The title of this thread indicates that this is just the first surprise for the holidays
No inside information. Just a guess based on the items in the picture matching the stereotypical portrayal of a coach. Many other guesses in this thread also thought it was something to do with training.
I am curious as to what the chart represents. Perhaps more statistics on our progress.
There are already some stats in Android app, so I guess it is coming to website also :)
Well, it would seem it has something to do with training. . .I can't wait to find out!
It looks a bit like those 80's sweaters which showed your tummy. Does it have anything to do with that?
Sure hoping that Duolingo does not decide to require tummy pics before participating!
I read something about being able to compete in timed practice with someone on our friends list...I immediately thought that would be so cool and hoping thats what this means!!!
I would love if it were some sort of more mobile, less-hands-intensive mode suited for use while at the gym.
Customizable owls. You get to choose colours, features and outfits. This is one of the costumes you can dress your owl of. I kid
Hey! I just updated my iPhone app and there's a new feature—outfits for Duo owl! I kid not!! :D
Yes I'm sure! It was the iPhone update that came out last Christmas. Two outfits: formal attire and champagne track suit. If you have the iPhone app, check out the Lingot store (in the app). That's where you'll see them. :)
Well, that's cool! I don't have the app, but I'm sure others will enjoy it.
I miss being able to use the app to strengthen my skills. I seriously dislike the new IOS update.
I can hardly wait to know what it is. I'm sure whatever it is, I will love it! Hurry up Thursday!! :D
Yeah! We're getting lockers in which to store all of our stacks of unspent lingots! ;-)
Seriously, hoping it's better long-term, searchable stats on our progress.
6:24 here now, hopefully the update is released when I come back from school. :3
I hope for something more elaborate, like time spent, 10 day average performance, etc.
Which stats? On Android i just have Streak, Words, XP, and Level. Same on the website. Maby the Apple app has more stats.
Here a screenshot of my android stats (german translation of the app): http://www7.pic-upload.de/11.12.13/6kanjmlygle.png
Do you have more stats?
Lol, it's the 12th here but in America it's still the 11th :) so I have to wait till tomorrow till the surprise :(
sooo.... it's Thursday...and nothing... the 1st box was an early April Fools joke? lol, really funny guys
I wonder why always iOS has priority over all... I am a little bit disappointed because the last place for the innovations is the PC platform, so I came to my PC to see the new improvement and just... nothing :(
I think it is not about web vs app, it is Android vs iPhone. There are more Android users in the world than iOS users.
First of all I must say that I appreciate a lot this incredible concept of free languages learning and I really thank you because I've been using it for personal learning and also as a fundamental tool for my job: teaching teenagers. However to be sincere I was quite excited about this first gift and I just felt very disappointed because I do not own any Apple's device, that's it. Anyways, thank you and I will feel happy when you give us the gift for Android.
PD Please, specify what kind of devices will have the improvement every time you tease us! ;0)
Thanks a lot, Professor von Ahn
I feel your pain, I've been translating the Coach related strings for a week or so already, and I was really looking forward to see it. And now what? It is very dissappointing.
I think you erred, it is Professor von Ahn . Mr is a title reserved for those (like myself) who don't possess a Doctorate degree or a Medical degree(in some countries).
Also, I just realized, that Philosophical Doctor Luis von Ahn , shares the same middle name as the Philosophical Doctor Victor von Doom, the genius mastermind and arch-enemy of the Fantastic Four. I guess at least the "von" name is reserved for geniuses. Hmm, I wonder if there are more von Ahn geniuses in the family.
While you're right that it is rather Doctor von Ahn, von is not a name by itself. Here is a quote from Wikipedia: "In German, von [fɔn] is a preposition which approximately means of or from. When it is used as a part of a German family name, it indicates almost always a noble patriarchal lineage. "Von" is usually a nobiliary particle, like de in French." My guess, is that Luis's preposition is of similar origin. I also would guess, that Luis would prefer to be called just Luis, and not Doctor von Ahn on Duolingo :)
My favorite discussion of this was a professor who, when asked at a conference how he preferred to be addressed, facetiously said, "You must call me Professor Doctor van Compernolle, PhD. Or Adam is fine too."
@ Larisa_L - I think this is a cultural issue, but I agree with you.
@ revdolphin - on a lighter note, a Professor once told me about the time he went to a hospital, and was annoyed at someone calling him Mr (E.g. Mr John). He told the person that he is not a Mr but a Professor, and the next time the person encountered him, he called him Mr Professor John!
Thanks, I didn't realize that, I'm guessing this exists in quite a lot of languages. In Portuguese we have Luis de Camoes, in Spanish, Juan Ponce de Leon, in French, Jehanne d'Arc, and so on.
About Luis' title, I was merely correcting the previous user, if he/she has to use a title preceding the Professor's name, the norm is that should generally be the correct one (not Mr). In this scenario where some people don't know Luis' title, it is better to just refer to him by the username I guess.
I recall an episode where I communicated to a person by email in my university, and I kept addressing the individual as Mr/Ms, even though their signature denoted a feminine name. Eventually the person changed the signature to explicitly denote "Ms".
Also, I personally know some Professors/Doctors that explicitly dislike being addressed as Mr/Ms, especially if you address them as Doctor when their rank is really Professor, and some find it disrespectful.
So in my experience it is better to avoid using titles or using the right ones if you know them.
It is all correct for official mail and emails, but for informal discussions like here, it is better not to use any of those formal things. And as at least half of my friends have PhD.s I can tell, thath many of them find it funny when people adress them as Dr. Only arrogant people care about it. But again, if you're writing something formal and official, you're better to know the person's title.
PS (about d'Ark, it is the same as de, it just contracts in front of a vowl)
I think this is a cultural issue
@Dessamator: It is indeed. In fact, being Russian, I smile when I read this discussion because we don't use any titles to address people. All you can do to address people with respect in Russian is use the person's name and patronymic, whether this person is your colleague (not close enough to be addressed just by name), an elderly person, a boss, a doctor, or a president :-)
@VorpalBlade: I'm not sure what you are talking about. I've never had to use any titles in my life.
Well, maybe it has something to do with the holidays as well? Since it's a holiday surprise? :D
The others seem fairly straightforward, but I wonder what the sweatband represents. I guess we'll find out tomorrow...
Thursday's almost here!—in the EST zone anyway. :D What time will the surprise be revealed?
If I switch from streak to coach can I switch back and maintain my concurrent days streak?
