streak freeze question

Does the streak freeze purchase engage straight away or is it stored and use itself when you miss a day of duolingo?

i think it is stored, i bought it week ago and it still says Equipped

Yes, Aca is right. If you are inactive on DL for a day, it automatically freezes itself :)

December 10, 2013

https://www.duolingo.com/DemetriusEJ

so considering all the helpful comments, as long as you buy the streak freeze, it activates automatically if you happen to miss a day, and also, if you do miss a day and it activates, it resets your specific language streak, but not your overall...??? Am I correct??? Also another question: if I buy the streak freeze, but don't ever use it, nothing will be affected right??? Like, if I don't miss a day and continue like normal, will everything remain the same?? No resets right, of course until they fix that problem??? Thanks for the feedback!!!

Oh goodness, let me see if I can get all of this right.
1. Yes. if you have it, it will activate automatically if you miss a day.
2. No, I don't believe you lose your language specific streak for the website, but you will for the apps.
3. Correct, if you don't use it, nothing happens. It remains inert until you miss a day.

If the streak freeze costs 10 lingots and only works for a single day, why would anyone ever buy it? It takes a full 10 day streak to acquire 1 lingot, it seems crazily overpriced, and doesn't seem worth buying unless you're planning on missing a single day and attached to like, building a very long streak for some reason.

October 18, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

I get 75 lingots in 7 days, and 10 days after that I get 76 lingots for my long streak. I gain even more lingots for helpful comments or uploading documents that people like into immersion. So, the longer one meets their goal and participates on Duolingo, the more lingots they get. Here are some lingots to get you started. :)

I am a pretty busy guy, but i still get like around 4-12 lingots everyday or so because of me putting in time into my schedule. I hope everyone has time for Duolingo!

you also get them for completing skills and if you do double or nothing you get 5 every week. plus there is not much else to spend them on

March 7, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/CalvinNest

that's because there is nothing else you can do with lingots after you buy the extras

January 21, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/RobinRockt

You get 1 lingot after a 10-day streak, 2 more at 20-day streak, 3 at 30-day streak and so on. Imagine you've got a long streak that you're really proud of. But for some unforeseeable reason you can't practice one day, then it was all lost! I can tell from my experience that a long streak makes me keep at it and I don't want to miss a day of learning. But whenever my streak fell to zero, the pressure to learn every day was gone. I'm always equipped with a streak freeze and - because it is expensive - try not to be forced to use it. Compare it to your car's airbag ;)

October 18, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/cazort

Ahh, okay, I think I understand how this works...I didn't realize the amount you get is cumulative with each additional 10 day streak. Thanks for clarifying!

October 19, 2015

It looks like you got 20 lingots for saying that. Congrats, that is two streak freezes.

The streak freese is active when you miss a day. It costs 10 lingots and you must buy the freeze again when you missed a day (I am German)

November 17, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/Suyai1

I decided to buy a streak freeze, after I did lost my days before, as an option in case I forget to practice again. So last night, I did my duolingo at 9:30pm and I got 180xp. Today duolingo said I didn't do it and took my "emergency" streak freeze. However, I can see that I did it, I'm one level up than yesterday. I don't understand! Why they took my streak freeze if I did my practice?

November 7, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

And it only lasts for 24 hours.

December 10, 2013

https://www.duolingo.com/RobinRockt

Is it consumed when I don't do my exercise for one day and I have to buy it again afterwards or will it work "every other day"?

February 17, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

You must purchase it each time.

I got caught up with life on a long streak and i notice today i didn't play at all yesterday. Can i use the freeze now to get it back? I didn't purchase one yet but i have plenty of lingots.

February 24, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

Unfortunately, Streak Freezes don't work retroactively. You have to have bought one before you miss a day.

February 25, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Soniya86

More recently, if you are using the Duolingo app at least, an option pops up to keep your streak active by paying $5. For those who have a really long streak and didn't have the streak freeze equipped when they missed a day, this could help as well. The more expensive solution in case we get caught up with things :)

there is an unlimited amount of times it can be purchased, although of course only one at a time (until it has been used).

Once purchased, how long does the streak freeze last for ? I am confused !!

May 5, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/wazzie

It last until you need it (you go one day without meeting your goal). Once it is used for that day, you must purchase another to maintain your streak.

May 5, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/Margie953142

I have NEVER missed a day but TWICE lost my streak freeze as if i did. Both times there were problems with the website that day and even if it's their fault they say too bad so sad. VERY frustrating. I keep losing out because of website error! What up!

May 16, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Alicia.J.P

Thank you. So, if not used, it lasts indefinitely ? Someone on here said that it only lasts 24 hours.

May 6, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/wazzie

Yes. It last indefinitely.
When they say "it only last 24 hours" what they mean is that it only protects one day once it is used (some users think they can buy a steak freeze and not practice for a week and still keep their streak).
I bought my first streak freeze in Sept 2013 and didn't use it until Dec 2014!

I want to have a better streak...

November 18, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/Joelabeautiful

what does streak freeze mean

February 8, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

The streak is the number of days you meet your daily goal. If you see a little flame at the top of the screen in the blue bar, that keeps count of your streak. The streak freeze, freezes that number if you miss a day. It only freezes it one day though. So you'll have to get another streak freeze as it runs out after you use it. It is good to keep it equipped in case you forget to study on a day. :)

February 9, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/ChristerJohn007

Thanks for the help. To sum it up. It automatically activates when you miss a day. It is reserved once you buy it. Now I need to get more lingots, and please lower its price to 5 or less lingots :)

April 14, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/romanoulis

The streak freeze is not reliable. I've lost significant streaks (100+ days) several times because of one day of inactivity even though I had an active freeze (which was also reset).

October 20, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

The Streak freeze very very rarely misfires. I myself kept a streak for 994 days. 100 days. 55 days and several others. Each time I lost any of these streaks, it was user error, not the fault of my streak freeze. And, that's actually what happens more often than not. I've addressed some of how user error defeats Streak Freezes in This Discussion. I hope that helps if you decide to build up a streak again in the future. :)

I bought a streak freeze ages ago because i thought i wouldn't get the chance to do itt hat day but i did. Now when i go into the store it says it is equipped so i presume it is stored until you miss a day

June 20, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Corsenna

A related question, I'm going out of town for a few days, if I buy 3 streak freezes right now, will it automatically use them each day I'm away? I most likely won't have an internet connection to log in and practice here or not during that time so I'd like to be as prepared as possible. I'm new so my streak is only 8 days, not really losing much, but I'm also close to the first 10 day mark.

August 8, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Alicia.J.P

No, unfortunately, you can only buy them one at a time.

August 10, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/Soniya86

From my experience with flying almost 3 days a week and having to be on Airplane mode during the 8 hour long flights, Duolingo App has certain topics available offline. I have seen that even when I practice on these offline, I still get the XP. I believe if you use this, then you might be able to go through the three days and when you are back and connected to the internet, you might still have your streak active. I am not 100% certain about this though. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in

Can I buy multiple streak freezes? I am going to be unable to use duolingo for 10 days due to no internet. I have a 216 day streak now & would like to put that on hold for 10 days? Is this possible? Or do I just start over? Will I keep my 555 lingots or lose them too?

July 28, 2017

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

You'll keep your lingots even if you lose your streak. So far, the longest streak freeze I'm aware of is a Weekend Amulet. I'm not sure if it is a test feature, or if it is available to everyone. After I reach my Coach goal on Friday's, it shows up in the Lingot Store for me on the most recent update of the Android app. What it does, is protect my streak if I don't reach my goals on Saturday and/or Sunday. However, I think it must be purchased each weekend, whether or not you use it. Other than that, there is a 1 day streak that needs to be purchased in advance. But, it stays as long as you have not missed a day. Once you miss a day, it pauses your streak for 24 hours. Then, you would need to purchase a new one with lingots. Otherwise, some people get an option to repair their streak by paying money, once they have already lost it. I don't know if it works after 24 hours of not using the option though. I've never used it or even seen the option on my app though. Outside of these two streak freezes and the streak repair (only available to some people), I am not aware of other options. :(

By what time must I buy this insurance? If I buy it 1 minute before midnight will it save my streak? Which time zone's midnight will be used (I presume Duolingo doesn't know my time zone).

January 6, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/Usagiboy7

Hi Danielaschaeffer,

Yes, Duolingo calculates your time zone. However, their approach has changed over the years. First, it was always in the tz you were in when you created your account. Then, it started updating for Android app users, to match the tz their phone was in so it changed if they traveled. I'm not certain what the current approach is. I've sent a request for that information so hopefully, I'll have it soon.

As for the Streak Freeze, equip it any time before you miss a day, and it will freeze your streak for one missed day. You'll need to equip a new one after that. However, there are a few common factors in streak loss once someone has equipped a Streak Freeze. I've detailed those in the discussion Checked your streak freeze today?. Click that link and it'll take you to it. :)

Is there any difference in purchasing a streak freeze on the app vs the web? (Other that the two different duo long currencies). Will one or the other be effective or do you have to equip both?

May 20, 2018

In my experience both are different. What appears on my app as done doesn't on the Web.

Does anyone know what happens if you can’t practice for multiple days because you don’t have WiFi or a cell phone signal. I see I can’t buy more than one streak freeze. So if I’m out of any cell range for multiple days do I loose my streak?

April 7, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/Suyai1

Yes, you will loose your streak. If this is something important to you, they have the option, for a couple of days, to buy it back for $6.99

https://www.duolingo.com/StephanieN436850

Bummer, okay thanks!

April 7, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/joesf49

I have not missed a day but Duolingo is taking away my streak freeze almost every other day now saying it’s used up. I have an 865 day streak.

April 8, 2019

https://www.duolingo.com/wazzie

Another thing to know is that it only freezes your overall streak. If I look at your profile now, I can see that you have a streak of 17 days in Spanish and 1 day in French. If you use a streak freeze, your overall streak will be frozen (the 17 in flames next to your name), but the language specific streaks will both be reset to zero.

December 10, 2013

https://www.duolingo.com/DemetriusEJ

Hi wazzie. I can't see the individual language streaks anywhere on profile. Have they been removed in the new layout?

They seem to be, at least I couldn't find them when I went looking for them.

February 15, 2014

Good point, wazzie, for those who are interested in individual language streaks. I've suggested to Kristin that this be explained in the store under the language for the Streak Freeze, and she said she'd take it to the team for consideration. Perhaps they'll add it sometime soon when they have some time.
