Doesn't the word 'приехали' refere to "we came with a vehicle, by bus, train..." ? My sentence was 'the athletes drove from belarus' and it was wrong.

You're technically not wrong, but I think in this case they're trying to illustrate that Ехать is the generic verb you'd use to show if people came from a long ways away (for instance a different city or country).
