I do not understand why an article is necessary before the word caballos. The English sentence does not say "the horses."

Yes, it is 100% necessary. In Spanish, if the object of a verb is a person (or people), you must put an "a" before it. For example, to say "I see Luis", you say "Yo veo a Luis". This "a" should not be put there when the object is a thing. For example "I see the chair" is "Yo veo la silla".

why is it "les" gustan instead of just gustan, thank you

I put los gustan because I thought horses were the direct object and the DO pronouns are los and las. So I was floored when I saw les. Where did I go wrong?
