Why would "if" be correct without "если" or "ли"?

The Russian question is literally "You know, already morning or not?" Of course, that doesn't work in English, so you have to come up with an English question with the same meaning which might or might not include "if".

I had to do this exercise three times... one of those times I got marked wrong for using "if" ( as in "do you know if it is morning yet or not") :S

DL does not accept "if"....strangely

Is "do you know is it already morning or not?" correct also?

Is "do you know, is it morning yet or not" a valid translation?

I think so. I'd report it.

Why not: Do you know, it is already morning or not?

I tried "do you know wether it's already morning or not?" And got marked wrong.

Wouldn't a better way to say it in Russian be: "Ты знаешь ли, уже утро или нет?"
