Tu es manger vs tu manges?

Duolingo says tu es manger and tu manges both mean you are eating. Is this correct? I feel like it isn't.

"Tu es manger" is nonsense. However, "tu es en train de manger" is okay if you want to emphasize the fact that the eating is happening right now. Otherwise, "tu manges" is the normal way to convey this idea.

I fully agree with your answer, but I wonder if there is any possibility to use the gerund mangeant in this situation.

"Mangeant" is used when you are doing an other thing.

Ex: don't speak while eating - ne parle pas en mangeant.

Ex: Il écoute les informations en mangeant

You cannot use "mangeant" for one action.

If you say "tu es mangé" to a french, he will hear "you are eaten" which is rather different. "tu es manger" do not exists, if you read this, this is a current grammar error for "tu es mangé"
