New IOS Update With Coaching Feature!

[deactivated user]

The IOS Duolingo app now has a new update! It has redesigned the app, added the new coaching feature, and a new lingot store is now available.

No practice button if your skills are all gold? Seriously?! Come on, guys, so many people ask to bring skill practice back, and now you take away the overall practice option as well! This means that now I can only do new lessons and repeat them individually on my iPad :-(

I'm not sure about that Coach thing. "The Coach replaces your streak (70 days) with a custom goal" scares me a bit. Will I lose my streak if I try the Coach? The daily goal seems to be time spent with the app, but will time spent on the site also count? I usually spend more than half an hour a day on Duolingo, but not in the app because I cannot practice skills there, and surely my memory is not as brilliant as to learn new lessons for half an hour or more.

Please restore the ability practise any time. Why would you limit that? Are people generating too may XPs? Then don't score when skills are all golden. But dictating when we can practise is insanity.

I don't agree with not scoring when skills are golden. Practice is an effort even if the system thinks you are perfect. It tends to overestimate you, really.

And anyway, these skill points don't cost Duolingo anything. They are just game points made to encourage us to learn and practice.

Maybe one of the next gifts while be some kind of practice improvement? If not, this is a huge disappointment.

I agree. Ditching the possibility to practise when you have all skills golden, is really a set back. This need to be made available again.

where exactly? I can't see it.... don't tell me that you cant even do that anymore after the practicing of entire skills thing is gone. that would make the app useless. I am still hoping I am too stupid to find it :(

arg. I dont have that and I know why. All my skills are golden (of course I do not know all the words). I should not have downloaded this, now the app is useless to me

Edit: I don't understand the down votes. A lot of users keep all their skills golden and won't be able to practice on the app anymore. I can't believe I'm the only one who is really upset about this.

I'm with you. I like to practice, so my skills stay naturally golden. I don't like to do new exercises on the app because of the lack of Discussion. I think I will be waiting to update this app. Thanks for the warning :(

I can no longer find the practice button either. What gives?

Awesome! So, for everyone who doesn't have iOS... what exactly is the new coaching feature? :D

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Pratica

Instead of having a ___ day streak, there's the option to switch to coaching. Coaching lets you pick a certain time interval per day. You must meet this time limit per day.

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SD-77

I'd rather just have a streak, since I already do a lot every day.

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/sommerlied

Thank you :D Sounds useful for people who like routine.

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/alsocass

What do you get for meeting the time limit each day. What is the motivator, the carrot? Or is the coach all about the stick?

Casual user here: Turned the coach on - told him I want to learn 10 min every day. Learned 10 min exactly, and started 3 lectures, I completed the first lecture, lost all my hearts in the second turn when I was 80% through, lost all my hearts in my third lecture when I was 60% through. Trainer said, I have not reached my goal, because I just have reached just 11 points, changed the goal to 5 min a day. Trainer still complains, I need 5 more points to reach my 5 min goal. Turned the coach off again. The old streak told me I did just fine with my 11 points and my streak just continued another day.

I usually need three attempts to finish a lecture, I also need three attempts to repeat a lecture. I try to repeat every day one lecture and to advance another one. If I do not succeeded advancing, well then I advance maybe the day after. My tree is far away from golden, and I just been told yesterday that I learn wrongly

I would like to learn every day just 10 minutes. But 10 minutes failing are still 10 minutes? If I wanted to reach a fix number of points I want be able to set so ...

So when I read that you hard core users what to learn more than 30 minutes a day (which I can understand, if you really want to learn a language as your prime activity, you might want to learn 5h a day split into different sections a day), I'm not sure who is the target group for the coach. Me as a lame duck, I don't get credits for having learned 10 minutes. Might be some average users are happy now.

Thank you for this report, it is really interesting to know. I agree that 10 minutes should be 10 minutes and not 16 points. Otherwise, it should be something like "10 minutes, but no less than 16 points earned".

Serious is 20 minutes and "insane" is 30 minutes a day?

    Yeah that's so hardcore, 30 minutes a day. -__-

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SD-77

To me, casual would be 20 minutes a day, regular would be 40-45, serious would be 2 hours, and insane would be 5 hours :)

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/olimo

30 minutes a day is really nothing serious, but without the practice option in the app it is not as fun :-(

Totally agree - and I don't want to lose my streak for some 'coach feature' who thinks practicing for 30 minutes a day is 'insane'. I mean, really?

Thank you so much! I thought that coaching was refering to something like a mentor for each user. A cute (kinda owl) mentor. But I guess this feature is also nice.

How are you expected to spend 30 minutes each day without being able to practice?! Learning only new skills all the time?

    December 12, 2013

They will return the practice feature, see Luis' comment here: http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1261519

If I switch to using the coach (it is an option) does that mean I will lose my streak on the web-login as well? I like the streak and don't want to have to start again.

Anyone have any more info on what this coach does? I mean I am assuming I will get a daily message from the app if I choose (but I already get a reminder so that isn't new), and I am guessing it is to motivate me to do a daily practice (but I already do a daily practice for my streak).

I am guessing the benefit would be for learning new stuff, ie if you don't earn coins you still get the 'reward'.

    Anyone have any more info?

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Pratica

It doesn't seem like it loses your streak on the site. I just changed mine from streak to coach and it still showed up as done on the site.

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mycoolroy

Thanks for the info, I have a question. If I practice using the app only, will it still continue my streak?

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Pratica

I believe so. Don't quote me on that though.

    December 12, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/smearedink

I have no idea about the coach, but yes, with the way the app has been set up for a long time now, you can practice solely on the app for days in a row and your streak will carry on.

This is an extremely disappointing update. Like many others who have posted here, I greatly valued the "Strengthen Skills" feature. It was the feature I used the most. After all, I learn by practicing. I have written to your company previously to thank you for your app because, for the first time, I have been truly learning another language (and I have tried several other language learning courses). If you do not return the "Strengthen Skills" feature, I will once again be searching for an effective way to continue my learning. PLEASE bring back the "Strengthen Skills" feature. Thank you.

    December 13, 2013

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Diffie

Ok, I'm not sure if this is official or not, but on twitter @duolingo posted that the "Strengthen Skills" feature is coming back as a reply to a few people who have made similar complaints to those made here. For me, it cannot return soon enough.
