Spanish Tree Finished - Some Resources to Share

I've finally completed my Spanish tree after around nine or ten months, and seeing every skill icon golden along with the small golden trophy at the very bottom is so satisfying! Duolingo has given me a steady foundation in the language, I can't wait to perfect and refine my skills and hopefully achieve fluency one day.

I'd like to take this time to share with you some resources that helped me with learning Spanish.

Firstly, the complete (and completely free) Spanish audio course by the Language Transfer project: http://www.languagetransfer.org/#!complete-spanish/c1313 This is probably the most useful resource I've been using besides Duolingo. Complete with ninety or so tracks that strip down Spanish to its core components and teach you how to build them back up again to form sentences and express yourself, I'd fully recommend this to anyone serious about learning Spanish and achieving proficiency. I will also mention that the project has audio courses in Arabic, German, Turkish, and Greek, and has plans to introduce more in the future.

Secondly, the Destinos series: http://www.learner.org/series/destinos/watch/index.html?ep1 This has helped a lot with practicing listening skills by taking the grammatical structures and words and phrases I've learned and putting them in real-world contexts. Though a little dated, it has a surprisingly well-written and entertaining story spread out over fifty-two episodes set in a small variety of Spanish-speaking countries and is, like the Language Transfer course, completely free. It also includes small exercises to complete after watching each episode.

Thirdly, the relatively new language learning platform Bliu Bliu: https://bliubliu.com/en/ Although this has a 'cool down' feature whereby the user has to wait five to ten minutes between sessions before being able to continue practicing (removable through paid membership), I found this excellent for translating real-world articles and text samples, and for practicing listening skills by transcribing audios or videos. It's more or less a better, easier to use, somewhat more broader version of Duolingo's 'Immersion' feature.

Forthly, I've also been making use of the Teach Yourself series' Teach Yourself Complete Latin American Spanish. Though this is a paid-for resource with a physical book and all, if you find yourself with some spare money available, I'd recommend picking up a copy, with the audio CDs if possible. The package I bought included both, though some places sell the book and CDs individually. This course guides the user through the Latin American variant of Spanish (there exists also an Iberian Spanish course under the name of Teach Yourself Complete Spanish) by introducing new vocabulary and grammatical rules in each chapter and applying it to a variety of contexts. It also makes notes about country-specific phrases, words, and pronunciations. You should be able to find far more detailed reviews on websites like Amazon if you're interested.

In addition to all these I've been practicing with native speakers of Spanish who are interested in learning English. This is a great way to improve your listening and speakers skills, and it's something any serious learner ought to try somewhere along the line. :) One useful website for meeting native speakers is this My Language Exchange: http://www.mylanguageexchange.com/penpals.asp

I hope now to take the reverse course here (the English for Spanish speakers course), another thing I'd recommend if you've completed your Spanish tree.

Thanks for taking the time to check out this post, and I hope you've found the recommended resources useful. Good luck to you all in learning this beautiful language. :)

Congratulations!!

I also use Destinos, I don't mind it being a little dated, I'm a little dated myself. Sometimes now when I get mail, I'll slowly crush the envelope in my hand and wisper, "Rosario"

I really enjoy Language Transfer too, I've only listened to a dozen or so episodes so far but it's great, kind of an audio version of Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish. I'm going to try their Arabic introduction sometime this year.

Haha, that's brilliant. :) And yeah, it's an amazing project. I'm actually on track eight of their introduction to Arabic course, and so far I'm really enjoying it. I hope you have a similar experience. :)

I am aiming to start Catalan too ( I live in Catalonia) but first I want to have a more stable basis in Castellano because mixing 2 half learned languages is not my aim. Catalan is more complex than spanish

Congrats on Completing the Spanish tree! Now your next goal should be to get to level 25! :)

Good luck in doing the reverse tree! :)

I will check out and maybe us some pf the resources you mentioned. I have been looking for some stuff to do alongside Duolingo, and these might just work. Thx!

Thanks for your response. :) When you do get around to trying some of them, I'd definitely advise you start with the Language Transfer course. It accompanies the Duolingo tree very well.

You just go on picking ´old´ yellow subjects and you will find new subjects will appear for you to practice. Using the time practice is quite fun too. I am plodding on to 25....

I think he means that we should practice or redo skills that are already gold (or were gold but have now lost strength). You probably already do this. There may be a few new sentences but I haven't noticed new skills. I think if you want more skills or sentences, it might be better to take the reverse course (as if you were a native Spanish speaker learning English.) Another challenging way to practice: take another foreign language from the point of view of a Spanish speaker, for instance the German from Spanish course.

I'm not gonna lie, duolingo to me seems so much more better than Rosetta Stone. It's just so much better. I can't believe I haven't used it before

Ditto re Rosetta Stone, having previous used it for three years for French. DL is far better, and free!

Congratulations on completing your tree. I have been trying for a very long time on and off for maybe 2 years. I never go to the next level till all are gold and so I have had to start over countless of times. I'm about 2 thirds of the way and determined this year I will finish! Thank you so much for sharing these resources.

Good luck with the reverse tree. I'm still long way to there but that's one thing I do look forward to.
