I was trying to think about ideas that could be a win-win for the Duolingo team and for learners like us and this is what popped up in my head: basically, what I propose is that you can grow your tree by doing immersion. Here are some ideas:

1: You can find new vocabulary in texts that you translate - the Duolingo Team could add a few hundred words that could be found in texts but are not available in the basic tree. After you find them you can keep practicing them, for example they can be added to a seperate lesson or folder.

2: For every level increase in immersion by translating you unlock a new (bonus) skills. Or perhaps just one level of a skill.

I am sure that something like this would stimulate me to do more immersion. There could be more ideas based on this train of thought, so I am curious what you think about it!

I love these ideas, but unfortunately Duolingo doesn't seem interested in going further with immersion. I am sure you are aware that it isn't even available for most languages.

And that's pretty sad because this is what it was originally aimed for, to make learning languages something achievable for a broader amount of people, those who were not able to buy tons of courses, for instance, by using what they are learning as something that would help translate "the internet into every language".

That way, an advertisements-free Duolingo becomes a reality, something beneficial to both users and "the web (knowledge that lays on it encrypted in many languages)" and payments are not required.

I don't know if you've seen the Tedx speech in which they present Duolingo, but that's what I'm talking about: http://youtu.be/cQl6jUjFjp4

I agree I love Jasper's ideas, but I'd like to be faithful that they can become a reality. It's a great concept overall.
