Do Streak Lingots Help You Leverage Motivation to Keep Learning? I Think So.

I just received a notification, a notification which I have not received in a very long time - "You earned 1 lingot for reaching a 10 day streak!". I don't know how long it's been since they reinstated the feature to all users; I stopped receiving streak lingots awhile ago as part of an A/B test on the site, & shortly thereafter I stopped using Duolingo - until recently, that is.

I'm fairly sure that I would have remained more motivated to keep my streak if they had never made me a part of that darn test. Maybe it was because enough people like myself stopped using the site for awhile in response to this that they decided to bring it back to everyone!

Either way, I am very grateful to be receiving streak lingots again, even if I'm only back to 1 for now. On one hand, the streak is not important for language learning. However, if it keeps you coming back every day as a regular member of the community, that motivation can be leveraged into consistent studying, which is the most important aspect of learning anything, especially languages.

I think lingots for streaks are quite motivating. I lost my 400+ day streak partly because I was super sick, but also because I was part of that same A/B test and it just wasn't worth it to me to drag myself out of bed, log in, and get the XP if I wasn't going to get any lingots for it. It's dumb, I know, because I have tons and there's nothing else I want in the lingot store, but I get a real kick out of giving lingots for good ideas, or as encouragement. But knowing I was not going to get any lingots was definitely part of my decision to give up my streak.

Wow!!! This is not the first time you've bestowed great gobs of lingots upon me. Thank you, Jolynne :)

And ooohhhh, you're SO CLOSE to 1000 days!!!
I'm excited for you. Are you excited?

I am excited, although it is not really a streak as I have used 2 or 3 streak freezes. (I have a tendency to get on and chat and forget to earn any XP) I feel a little like a cheater with this streak, but I do like getting the Lingots, although I totally agree that it is dumb as they really aren't worth much on their own. It is fun to give them away.

Sure it is, everybody on the site is playing by the same rules (save for the occasional A/B test). Your streak is just as "valid" as anyone else's.

For me, the streak itself is a motivation, but not the lingots - I have so many of them that I hardly notice when I get some more. Many of them are probably from the streak so I can't say it was always so, I suppose I appreciated them at the beginning, but I wouldn't mind not getting any lingots now.

Agreed. I'll get, let's see, 96 lingots in eight days, assuming the streak continues. I have 9,438 lingots right now. They're useless pixels to me. The streak length is kind of motivating (and also an albatross that I also wish I could throw off more easily), but more lingots? No. They're not motivational at all -they're just there.

I'd agree that the streak in itself is my end goal rather than the lingots, but if you don't have a ton stockpiled the lingot reward can make maintaining a streak easier by letting you afford more streak freezes, so they're not entirely useless. Still, Duolingo should definitely expand the lingot store so they become more desirable.

It wasn't gone for that long, maybe a month or so.

Exactly - I only remember it being gone for a short while. Perhaps the usage data spoke loud and clear to them.

I agree. I was thinking of losing my streak after one year and so I wrote the date of my "duobirthday" to remember when I had begun. Then I thought, "well, I can continue until three thousand lingots." I have 2,910 (since I just gave you one). After being 500 days I'll see.

Yesterday I was awarded 40 lingots. Hopefully they return that feature. I was in the lucky group which didn't have that taken away, but anyhow, it is a great motivation for many users.

It was more important to me in the beginning, when I really wanted to acquire those lingots to be able to buy quizzes. Now that I have enough lingots that I don't feel the need to ration my quizzes quite so much, I don't worry about the streak so much.

It would be motivating if there were more things to buy in the lingot store - maybe more specific vocabulary skills or grammar drills? And I'd really love immersion to translate into the target language! I guess I could work the reverse tree in order to do that. But I've never gotten into immersion because right now it's only about reading comprehension, and what I need to work on is recall and sentence formulation.

Further thought on this... what if you participated in immersion by being given a sentence to proof, and then getting to translate your own? I think one problem with translation into the target language is probably a lack of people to check the work for correctness. If participants had to proof stuff in their native language before they got to try their own translation, that would encourage people to play.

At least I know it'd work for me. :-)

No point in doing the test until you have completed your tree.... as it tests you on the whole content of the tree. By the time you have finished you'll have loads of lingots.

It might actually be a good idea to try it a few times throughout the tree to see if you're improving. I tested myself the other day, when I was halfway through the course, and was pleased to see that I had scored almost half the points. It'll be interesting to compare the score to a later one.

But there's no need to do it too often.

for me, the streak itself is much more motivating (because I have like 2600 lingots, and you can't really do anything with them)

Not necessarily the lingots. That's more of a bonus for me. I just like seeing my streak number go up and up and up every day. :)

Yes, just a couple of days ago, i received the same message. it motivated me to keep going with my streak knowing that can earn lingots along the way.

https://www.duolingo.com/OneAndOnlyJosh

For me, the lingots aren't the motivation. The motivation comes from the streak itself.
