How to type accents without changing keyboard language.

I was getting really frustrated at clicking on the accent buttons in Duolingo, and having to copy and paste accents into emails and messages or change my keyboard language to Spanish (which gets frustrating as then most of the punctuation is on different buttons). So I finally worked out a much quicker and easier way.

  1. Change the keyboard language to United States International - go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9754188

  2. Follow this guide for typing accents - http://www.forlang.wsu.edu/help/keyboards1.asp

Also works for German, French and Portuguese.

Yep, it's awesome. Here's another explanation of how it works along with a diagram of the RightAlt-accessible characters:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#US-International

For Russian there's also a mnemonic keyboard where most (though not all) punctuation is in the same place as in the US layout and the Russian characters themselves are on keys corresponding to their romanization (e.g. d -> д), with a few accessible via key combinations (e.g. sc -> щ, jo -> ё).

Nice! I had always used the ALT + 130,160,161,162,163, and 164 shortcuts for é á í ó ú ñ respectively. This way you don't have to change the keyboard language at all, but.... I definitely like your way better!

I had memorised ö: 0246, ü: 0252, ä: 0228 and ß: 0223. Now it seems a little silly :-(

You should be able to hold down the letter, for instance 'e', and it ought to give you a list of options to select from.

Druckles is right.

You can also enable a Spanish keyboard in Android. It will provide Spanish spelling recommendations with correct accent marks. You can easily toggle between Spanish and English keyboards once both are enabled.

Settings > Language & input > Google Keyboard > Languages > Spanish

You'll still need to hold down keys to get some special characters, such as inverted question marks.

Finally! I knew I needed accents on my words but holding down the key was tricky with my phone. Enabling the French keyboard helped a lot!

If you (hypothetical future reader) are on Linux, this might help: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1351

or if you have a mac, you can easily create your own layout with ukulele. like copying the original you use, but for some unused combination, you put the accents, like i did with the alt-n to the spanish 'ñ'.

This is great. Now maybe I can use proper punctuation and spelling when using timed practice.

How can I do this on a Chromebook?

There's a chrome accent that lets you type characters with accents as well: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fastaccent/gkadokkbkifbfpiljldcnnpkebpannhb The key combinations are the same as in Microsoft Word.
